Using up the last...

Using up the last of anything always makes me surprisingly happy.  I can't explain why that is exactly, true I like to open or start a new thing, but I am also not in the least bit fazed if it really is the last of whatever it is.

At the moment while we are eating our way through the cupboards and freezers and not shopping, using up the last of anything always gives me a little bit more space and I must say I love space more than I love things.  So it makes me very happy.

One more slice of toast the day after I took this picture and the peanut butter was all gone.  Jar rinsed out and popped in the recycling bin (I have all the jars I need at the moment so am recycling all but the very best) and now I have a little bit more space in the cupboard.

I'm loving this using up the last of everything.

What strange little foibles do you have ?

(I love that word 'foibles', dictionary definition - a strange habit or characteristic that is seen as not important and not harming anyone).

  1. I like to see how long I can make the last of the shampoo or conditioner last in the bottom of its container. Again love to squeeze every little bit out of the toothpaste.

  2. Hmm, let's see...I've started to cut the plastic bottles in half to either scrape out the last bits that get stuck at the bottom to actually use them, or maybe transfer what's left into an existing pot of the same sort of thing, e.g - we've had a wonderful array of rainbow colours as handwash just lately. I do try not to make brownish shades tho', otherwise the DDs won't use it! Also, this morning I just threw a couple of 'stuck' bottles directly in the bath as I was running it (think one was shampoo but it's all basically the same ingredients, no?)...a few rinses and swishes around and they came out clean for recycling, and I hadn't needed to add any other bath stuff! My mum adds a spot of vinegar to the last bit of sauce in the bottle, though I never liked the flavour or texture when she did that. But hey presto, no waste!
I'm sure I've got loads of little foibles, Sue -- they'll probably come to mind as I go about my daily bits and pieces now you've prompted the thought! Great post - could be an interesting day! :-)

  3. I'm with you on the "using things up" - but mine is especially in relation to toiletries - that might be partly due to the excitement of raiding my stash to see what I fancy using next, mind you!
I am slightly concerned by one thing though - is that SMOOTH peanut butter? Disgraceful! ;-)

  6. I'm with you on using up the last. My only request for Christmas was a tiny rubber spatula. None of my large ones would really let me totally scrape out a jar...lol.

Of course, I do the same thing with condiments, shampoo, etc. My family is always amused at how many "upside" down bottles they can find around the house.

  7. I use mustard & tomato puree when making casseroles, gravy etc. I love adding a little water into a nearly empty jar & shaking vigerously to get a totally empty jar !

  8. My only 2 foibles are that I use two different mugs, one for ordenary red bush tea and another for making myself some rosehip and hebiscus tea. I don`t like waste, and will make the most of any shampoo left in a bottle by mixing it with a bit of water from the tap to get the last drop out.

  9. I agree it is such a satisfying feeling to have bought something and used all of it, especially with food - even better to have grown something yourself and then made something with it. I also like to see how long I can keep items like fridges and washing machines to feel satisfied I have got my monies worth! At the moment my kitchen Fridge is running at 28 years old! However, I suspect as I go through our house I am going to discover lots of things that I now wish I had not bought and I will see £ signs in front of my eyes at the money I could have saved!

  10. I've just decanted all the half bottles of shampoo that don't suit my daughters' hair into one big pump bottle for hubby to use - he's not fussy! It looks lovely though - lots of layers of pinks and creams in a clear bottle.

I also save the jars of Easy garlic and wash them out into the pan with a little water when I make a stew or spag bol, I can't do that when I use them for garlic roast potatoes so I make sure I get the very last bit out of the jars. :-)

  11. I like to cut the toothpaste tube open to get the last bit out.

I like to stand containers upside down to get last bits out.

  12. I like to use a spatula for jars and the last bit in the sauce bottles gets rinsed out into a casserole. Liquid soap and bath stuff gets rinsed under the bath taps and I have been conditioning my hair with the rinsings from the bottle for a couple of weeks.

I quite fancy some peanut butter on toast now....

  13. Hi Sue, I use a spatula to get the last of the peanut butter out of the jar too. I also stand things upside down and dilute the last bits of conditioner/liquid soap etc.
I always try and buy bubble bath with a squeezy top as the ones with an open neck get used a lot faster. Oh and also do the jar shaking thing too :0)
Quite a lot of foibles !

  14. My foible is that I DON'T like getting to the end of something because I know it's going to cost me money to replace it :)
But I do like to use less than the recommended eg toothpaste, shampoo etc, to make them all last longer!
