Muffin Mountain

I spent yesterday whipping up my very own Chocolate and Banana Muffin mountain and I don't even like chocolate cake very much!!

They're for Lovely Hubby to take to work, it's his birthday tomorrow and it's traditional in his office to take cakes for everyone (seemingly in every department) to have with their coffee on the day.  It's always struck me as strange that one, it's your birthday and you have to take cake, everyone should buy you one.....now that I would like!!

Of course most folk just nip to the supermarket and purchase around eight boxes of a certain Mr Kipl*ngs offerings, but when you're on a tight budget you crack to and make them yourself.

And yet again my Approved Foods ordering came to the rescue, I do have to admit that when I ordered this I thought it was 2.5kg and it turned out to be 12.5kg, so it's lasting us for ages, but at £4.99 I've more than had my moneys worth.   I made up four batches of 500g and added half of a very ripe banana to each mix and then I had a kitchen with 48 muffins cooling on the racks and smelling pretty yummy.

Money saved - well at 40p a kilo and I used 2kgs of mix I spent 80p, the bananas were the last of a bunch and worked out at 10p each so I spent £1 to make 48 cakes.  Forty eight of Mr Kipl*ngs cakes at an average price for a box of six of £1 would have set me back £8, so I reckon I have saved myself at least £7 - I'm a happy bunny.

I won't tell you how old he is, he'll be all embarrassed and bashful, but I did decorate the brown paper I wrapped his present in and draw the stamp on his envelope in a very specific way.....lol!!

Happy Birthday Lovely Hubby
I love you lots, my gorgeous old man.

  1. Those cakes look lovely and such a bargain! Did you need to add eggs as well or was that already included in the cake mix? And happy birthday to your other half !

    1. Nope, no eggs need to be added, just 250mls of water to every 500g of mix, easy peasy.

  10. A very Happy Birthday to LH - hope the workmates enjoy those scrummy looking muffins!
Mr Kipling might well make exceedingly good cakes, but from the look of those photos, so do you!

  11. I would not dare have cake mix in the house, too easy to make a batch and eat them warm while pottering around. Been there, read the book, got the tee shirt {it is too small now).

  20. A very happy birthday to Lovely Hubby!
the cakes look fab Sue, great use of resources. I am bit cross with myself as I ended up in the dreaded supermarket earlier today and came out with more than I should, I do not need anything else!! So now I may have to think about putting something on my blog and then you can all hold me accountable for my unnecessary spending!
    Take care
