Let Food Be Thy Medicine ...

'Let food be thy medicine and medicine by they food' ... said Hippocrates.

How true is that!!

Well at the moment I am stuffed full of a cold and all it's accompanying aches and pains, this morning I slowly and steadily worked my way through the daily chores so that I can collapse in a heap and while the afternoon away on the sofa.  The dogs love a sofa day so they are in for a pleasant surprise  :-)

While I was out watering the polytunnel I gathered in a selection of tasty freshness and collected this  mornings newly laid eggs as I cleaned out the henhouse.  I intend to banish this cold and it's germs with lots of homegrown goodies, lots of hot drinks and two paracetamols every four hours .... I'm not totally relying on fruit and vegetables.

But after reading this I might add a bit more garlic, some turmeric and some more onions to the pot of soup that is currently bubbling away on the Aga, it's doesn't hurt to fight a cold with everything in your repertoire  :-)

  1. Hope you feel better very soon. Colds may be common but that doesn't stop them being the absolute pits!

  2. Amen to everything you've said.

Unfortunately the food industry has nothing to gain by promoting healthy meals instead of carbohydrate laden convenience products, and the pharmaceutical industry has nothing to gain by developing cures that actually work (think about it - healthy people aren't profitable).

Do hope you feel better soon, you're certainly doing all the right things.

  3. I wonder what Colloidal Silver is?
I hope you have moaned loudly at the person who passed this cold onto you!
    Get well soon.

    1. Seemingly it is a mineral derived from silver, I'd never heard of it either!

Yes, Lovely Hubby has been well and truly admonished and moaned at for giving me his cold ... which he got immediately after getting his flu shot last week :-(

  4. I agree totally with you about 'proper' food aiding and abetting us to a healthier life. If only I could take something to cure all my ills then I would be as happy as a sandboy. Good luck with your cold, a simple thing, but it makes us so miserable especially when it goes on-and-on-and-on.

  5. Elderberries are very good for colds (and flu) too. If you have some in the freezer, make up some syrup - it really will help.

    1. Yes another vote for elderberry. I make a syrup every year to help with coughs and colds, great stuff. Can the ginger be dried or does it have to be fresh?

  6. P.S. Colloidal Silver apparently has all sorts of uses (including worming animals and treating fleas in pets when brushed through the coat), and some folk swear by it. I don't know how it helps treat a cold though.

  9. Lots to drink, nice hot soup, plenty of warm fireside and early to bed - that is how I treat a cold. Oh and paracetamol.

  12. Doing the high fat diet I do, and so low carb, I've noticed just how much carbohydrate is sold in supermarkets. Lot so of berries make my skin glow!

  13. I totally agree with you about how influencial the food industry are, they have no desire to make us healthy or helping us to think about what we are eating. Home Grown everytime...yea. Hope you feel better soon. Woo xx

  14. I hope you feel better soon! My favourite natural cold remedy is a drink of warm milk, raw honey, tumeric, cinnamon and coconut oil... Tastes great and really does help!
