The £2 House Keeping Challenge - Officially Over

We went shopping towards the end of last week and it officially ended the £2 House Keeping Challenge, we could not keep below the £26 that I had left in the house keeping tin and manage to afford all that we needed for our next Challenge.  This little lot came to just below £35.

This one is the first Challenge totally started by Lovely Hubby and one that I'm more than happy to join in with.

He watched a programme the other week called Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead, and was totally inspired especially by the lorry driver Phil's story.  He decided then and there to give this ago and asked me to order a Juicer that night.  I did, and what we are about to do may go down in our family folklore.

Here's a link to the programme if you would like to watch it, it is available for only TWO MORE DAYS, although you can buy it on Dvd on Amazon now.

His new toy arrived on Thursday and already it has made us litres and litres of vegetable and fruit juice.  In fact all that's left in the fridge from all those fruits and vegetables in the top picture are a few sad ends of things.  It's dangerous to stand still in this house at the moment in case you get grabbed and juiced.

Only joking of course.

The juice that's being churned out by this magnificent machine is really good and I must say I'm really enjoying being the official taster.  Lovely Hubby doesn't like to stick to recipes and up to now he has just been pushing whatever comes to hand through the machine.  If the juice tastes a bit too 'leeky' he'll add an apple, if it tastes too fruity he'll add some cabbage leaves from the Veggie Patch.  He just keeps adding and adding until it tastes really good.  When all the flasks and jugs are filled I have to get him to stop.

I'm off to the shops again today to get more supplies, although I think I may have to hide them until all the current jugs and flasks are empty.

  1. I look forward to seeing how this unfolds for you. I have tried to watch but can not get it to play, I may have to go up the Amazon to get it. We do have a juicer so i just need to decobweb it and get it set up.

    1. I hope you can get it to play, I've just double checked the link and it seems to be working fine, although you do have to sit through a couple of adverts before the programme starts :-(

  2. It was a very good programme and I was amazed at how 'karma' enabled them to meet. Mind you, is hubby going to do the full thing, i.e. only 3 glasses of juice for 60 days was it? I know someone who does 2 glasses a day then a normal healthy meal in the evening. I too was inspired by it although won't be doing it as both of us eat quite healthily as it is (with the odd exception) and are maintaining our weight and losing it every now and then. The lorry driver was so inspiring, not only in sticking to it but also inspiring others to give it a try. I hope it works for you both, life is just too short and precious to mess up.

    1. It was mind blowing how they met up and had so much in common!!

LH is doing just juice for the first five days and will then re-assess, so he can check how well it's working for him and how he's feeling etc. You can drink a lot more than 3 glasses a day though. In Joe's plan you have a minimum of 6 juices with water and herbal teas whenever you are thirsty in between juices.

If he really feels the need for solid foods after the first five days he will then switch to juices for breakfast and lunch and then a meal based around a protein source ie. meat, fish or eggs with vegetables for his tea. But there will be NO processed foods at all for the duration of the diet.

  4. I don't watch a huge amount of tv so missed watching this although I had heard about it and was interested so see the results. I used to have a juicer and used it regularly until 'someone' knocked it off the worktop and it broke ;-(

Will have a look at it later

    1. It's well worth watching :-)

It is out on Dvd now, so when it's no longer available online folk will still be able to watch and be inspired.

  5. Used to have a jucier until it started to juice itself! I don't think I could ever be full on juice alone. Good luck though

  7. I have enjoyed your £2 Housekeeping challenge a lot. You did so well to last as long as you did on what was in the tin. I look forward to following your new challenge although I don't think I could do it myself. Good Luck.

  10. I saw the programme to, it was amazing. I am thinking about getting a juicer again. I had one years ago and broke it eventually. My favourite was apple, carrot and ginger (so good).
Your £2 housekeeping challenge has been very interesting to follow.

  11. Congratulations on the 2 pound challenge lasting so long. It took a lot of discipline on your part to stretch the pennies. I couldn't play the video but did read a lot of the comments. Sounds like there are a lot of pros and cons. I thought you were doing the Harcombe diet or the 5 and 2 diet. There seem to be so many diets floating around blogland these days. Are you going to do the diet as well?

  12. Well done on your £2 challenge, it has been really interesting to follow. Do you know how much money you have saved? I would love to do something similar but we do not have the space to 'stockpile' (therefore AF order not possible). I have however used your suggestion to make pasta sauce in 'vacuum' jars. I have never done this before and it worked wonderfully well. I did not make 11 jars full, but I did make 3 jars which was fine, one for now and two to save. Will also make some jam when the blackberries are in season and a couple of bottles of fruit cordial in the autumn. Best of luck with your new challenge. I really don't think that I could go without solid food for even two meals a day, although I do eat a lot of vegetable soup in the winter months.

  13. It's been a delight to follow your £2 Challenge and a success you've made it over half a year! F,S & ND was one of the few programmes I have managed to watch recently & found it very interesting - best of luck to hubby.

  14. I saw that program and I told everyone I knew about it, it was amazing! We have the same juicer, they're brilliant little machines and well worth the money.
