Unveiling the 'Almost Finished' Conservatory

I thought I would show you the 'almost finished' conservatory, yes we still call it that ..... the name has just stuck and I think calling it 'The Garden Room' as it was titled on the planning permission plans, just looks and sounds a little bit more pretentious than we are.

I'm a Manchester girl don't forget  ;-)

The almost finishing touches went in last week when the oak worktops were added to the windowsills, they make a bench area around the dining table (which is also oak under it's spotty tablecloth) and a matching sill on the other side of the room.

It has really finished the room off ......

... well almost!!

The off-cuts from the worktops, because obviously we didn't need the full depth that a kitchen work top (counter-top) has, have been sanded and finished to make us some shelves to go on this bare bit of wall.  We actually got three shelves that will sit here perfectly and two additional longer ones, that we will find a home for in the future, if we need them.

The shelves in the conservatory will not be filled with clutter, but will simply hold some of the more decorative jugs and bowls that currently live in my cupboards.  I don't like ornaments as such,  but some of our things that we don't actually use everyday, but that do get called into use on a regular basis are just too pretty and too full of lovely memories of days out to simply languish behind closed doors.

The only new things we have bought for our almost finished room were the four new cushions, just in case anyone finds the oak benches a little too hard to sit on, of course they had to be in our favourite shades of green!!

Hopefully if the weather is okay later in the week, the tarmac that will be the finishing touch to the outside of the conservatory will be laid.  One day of groundworks and new edging stones laid where currently there are wooden ones, and then a day of tarmacking should see us looking a lot neater outdoors, and then at last there will be less mud and chippings walked in on our wellies and the dogs and Gingers little mucky paws.

Declutter snip

Talking of clutter and loving the simple look of the conservatory as much as we do, I've decided to join in with Elaine's, over at Mortgage Free in Three  'February Fling Challenge'.

The idea being that you declutter one thing on the first of the month, two things on the second, three on the third etc, etc.  That will be a total of 406 by the end of February.  To help you keep tabs on what you have got rid of she has produced this brilliant little chart that I have just printed out and will be keeping handy to keep me on track.

Why don't you nip over to her blog using the link above and get yourself a copy and see how well you can do.  As I only need to find another 84 items for my 'Decluttering 365' this would take me nicely over and mean that we have lots of lovely items to sell at the one and only car boot sale of the year that we hope to do when the weather improves.

Obviously some of the things are going to be little bitty bits but everything that we don't really need is clutter in my eyes, so it all adds up and in this year of 'Needs not Wants' it's good to be inspired to have a purge.

    1. Eventually when all the work on and around the house is finished, our house will be painted a slightly lighter shade of grey. We may not reach 50 shades but we'll have a few ;-)

    1. I'm not quite that posh, ours was a length bought from Dunelm, it's good being wipe-able ... Ginger likes to sit on the table and survey the world.

  3. love that room, I bet you will get a lot of use from it. We don't have that sort of thing in Canada. Is that an oil cloth table cloth? I love them.

  4. It's looking great, very elegant! I love the tablecloth, is it oilcloth or fabric. I cut out a skirt in a similar looking cotton, which is now languishing on my to do pile. Who am I kidding, languishing in the pile! x

I got rid of my pile of 'things to do' it was amazing how many people bought them to add to their own!!

  5. Loving your garden room, love the shades of green (my favorite colour).
I have been sorting my craft items out, got rid of loads of hand made cards, made by me a few years ago, much to basic for me to use now. It's so rewarding to have a good sort out.

  7. Am also thinking how useful that overhang will be! I have quite a large conservatory which is currently full of stuff (the joys of combining two households into one over the summer - my husband is a terrible hoarder)! I used to love using it and would love to again, especially if I could change the roof! You have quite inspired me, must get saving and de-cluttering!

    1. Yes we are loving the overhang, it came about by accident as it was needed to get the right slant on the roof (I'm sure there is a much more technical term).

The dogs love it, they stay under it for a quick wee when there's a downpour (who are we to object we have an indoor toilet ..... and a bucket of soapy water every couple of days keeps things fresh). And we plan to put a bench at the side facing the road to sit and admire the view in Summer.

    2. Aw bless em! Was thinking how it will offer shelter for humans, animals and plants from the gales and the worst of the rain. A happy accident indeed and a lovely place, as you say to sit back with a brew and enjoy the view when it's a bit less nippy!

  8. Sue, your conservatory looks absolutely lovely, all bright and cheery. I'm sure you are glad to have it to this stage, and the end is in sight. Good luck with your continuing declutter project.

  9. Looks good! Be a great space and I'm sure you'll use it all the time. My mum and dad have got one and it's the main area of the house that everyone goes to now!
As for the declutter challenge I'm pretty sure that would do me some good but I'd never stick to it!

  13. Sue what a lovely room. Love that you have made seats out of the window sills. I am afraid I would clutter it all up with my craft bits. As it is a light room to work in. Enjoy your new space.

  15. You made me laugh when you called it a conservatory instead of a garden room, I know just what you mean (I'm a Manchester girl too). Anyway it looks lovely xxx

  17. What a lovely new space, so tastefully done. The oak and the soft greens look great together and I absolutely LOVE those lights above the table. I might have to look for something similar to go over our dining table.

  18. From Margie in Toronto - the room is lovely - so serene, yet welcoming, the wood really warms it up and I love the soft green.

  20. The room looks great! Our conservatory is my favourite space in the house (well, apart from my bed I guess!). The light is wonderful and it's great to feel part of outdoors even when the weather is inclement. No doubt you'll spend lots of time in there.

  22. It looks lovely, and will be a great space when the weather improves too. The overhang on the roof will provide some shade in the summer too, lovely. I've been busy decluttering too, not doing too bad either x

  24. I love the design of your 'conservatory'. The pillars add real style. I so often get an urge to declutter and then more appears. I do not know where 'stuff' that crams into every space in my house comes from. I will print off the declutter chart and see how I go. Thank you

  25. That's beautiful. We would call it a sun room, even if it were being used for shade!
