Going Away for the Weekend ?

I just thought I would share a quick tip for any of you who are going away for a few days during this hot weather, and want your houseplants to survive without having to ask a neighbour to come in and water them.

After giving them a good water you can simply stand them all on a wet towel in the bottom of the bath, or as I usually do because I only have a few indoor plants, half fill the kitchen sink with water, lay an old towel in the water, put the other end of it on a large tray and stand all the plants on top of it.  They will draw up water from the towel as they need it and the towel will absorb more from the sink as they dry it out.

This time however, just as I was setting this up ready to go away last weekend, I remembered the water under our kitchen units and put half the towel under the cupboard in the puddle of water and the other half onto the tray, this had the added bonus of getting the plants in a nice shady corner of the kitchen too and they were soaking up some of the water while I was away from home.

  1. That postcard reminds me of the time we looked after (?) a place in the country for some friends and during our stay the fox got at the chickens (no need to shut them up they will find their own roosts she'd said!) and a couple of their sheep got fly-strike which of course we didn't recognise early enough! Luckily the pregnant cow and all their cats were well and happy when they returned though!

  2. Genius, talk about finding a silver lining in a dark cloud!

I'm not going away but everyone else is away this weekend so I'm home alone, I'm loving it.......is this what it will be like when the kids leave home? Ohhhh can't wait. Eat when I want to, sleep when I want to bliss ;)

  3. My daughter moves in whilst we are away, so cats are fed, garden is watered and all our food is ate.
But no worries whilst we are away.
Brilliant idea to place towel on floor to soak away water from under your cabinets.

  4. Brilliant idea, thank you. When I get some more house plants to replace the ones I have already killed I will try this

  5. Sue I have a lovely neighbor who is watering my outside plants, as I have them in huge pots that are too big to move inside. We do plan on a longer trip next summer, so am thinking of artificial flowers! My daughters have my dogs and are sending pictures of them of how well they are doing while I am away.
