The Store Cupboard

Someone asked me what will I miss most about this little bungalow.

There have been lots of advantages to us living here for the last two years.  The fact that it's half the price in rent than our last place meant we could save up even faster to get together the deposit for our forever home and that was very important, that it was a fifteen minute drive for Lovely Hubby to get to work instead of the previous hours journey each way was brilliant and meant more time together and less money in fuel and wear and tear on the car.

But the one thing in the house that I will miss the most ....

... is the little built in larder in the kitchen.

They knew how to make provision for storing food in the 1930's.  The shelves are deep enough and with enough space between them to store the maximum amount of food, the cupboard is nice and dry and everything is totally accessible.  I've been amazed at how much food it has managed to hold.  Even a full Approved Foods order has fitted neatly into the shelves after each delivery.

If I can find a way to replicate this in the new house I will be a very happy little bunny :-)

(This picture was taken before we started eating our way through the stores, it's looking a lot emptier now.)

  3. I may have missed this in a previous post, but is your husband going to be commuting from Wales to work when you move?

  4. I love that cupboard. The next time we move I think I'll be looking for a house with a built in larder or storage cupboard. I remember the larders in my nan's and mum's houses and wish I had one.

  5. just love it. In my house for the first time ever I have a larder my little grand daughter can stand in to get the biscuit tin when she visits - not only do I keep supplies but also kitchen equipment - when we move I will never have such a cupboard again:(

  7. I have a cupboard like that. I bought it in the YMCA shop. some clever person had converted an old wooden wardrobe with shelves to make either a linens cupboard or a larder. I use it for my food storage. I love its bakelite handles

there is something beautiful about a cupboard stocked like that. isn't there?

    1. What a great idea to recycle a free standing wardrobe into a store cupboard. I have see some lovely old wardrobe about. It seem like a waste.

  8. My Mother's house had a proper walk in pantry, with a stone shelf at the bottom and shelves on 2 walls. She died in 2011 and the house is being hugely extended now by the new owners…..I wonder if they will keep the pantry!

  9. I love larders and kitchen cupboards like this. I once had one in a 1930s house we lived in. Alas, never since and always lack of storage! x

  10. When I manage to build our extension I'm determind to have a store cupboard like this! We struggle for space on things like this. Mum and dads has a great walk in pantry and I've built shelves in there that are high enough to hold cans but lots of them!

  11. A wonderful cupboard. I could do with one of those! The more storage space there is, the happier I am, the more organised everything feels.

  12. I love my larder too - any future home of ours will definitely have to have one built if it doesn't have one to start with!

  14. This house has a large walk in pantry and I love it. After coming from a house with very few cupboards, I was in heaven. I cant believe I actually run out of room in my pantry occasionally. When this happens it is time for a big tidy up and sort out!

I hope you find something suitable to use as a pantry cupboard for your new home :)
