Do I Give a Fig ......

Do I give a fig ..... yes I do .... to Lovely Hubby with virtually every meal.

They're good with porridge, sliced into cereal,  eaten with little lumps of Feta for an impromptu snack ...

... but best of all he likes them in salads.

Any salad will do as long as it has a minimum of three figs.  It's not a bad obsession and it's one I'm definitely encouraging because I hate the things, they're much too sweet for me and they somehow just look wrong!

I know that sounds daft but ....... YUK!!

It's a good job one of us likes them, this is how many we've been getting every other day for the last two weeks.

We are trying to get branches from the huge plant growing at the side of this house to root, one of them  definitely has roots on (I pulled it up to look ...... hehe, and then quickly replanted it) and the other two look promising, the fourth pinged back up out of it's pot determined that it would not stay held down for neither love nor money, thank goodness is all I say.

If we are getting this much fruit from one plant how many would we get from four?

  1. I love figs too - our tree gave me a fig every day till I went on holiday - now it seems to be sulking a bit! The fruit son mine are greeny brown rather than the purply black variety you have. All delicious tho xx

    1. Now that would be MY perfect Fig tree, a lovely big luscious plant with a minimum of fruits, just my luck to have the most prolific (and huge) fig tree in the world!!

    1. It just grows outside on the sunny side of the house, and it gets all the late afternoon sun which has been pretty prolific this year, so I guess it's in it's element :-)

  6. I have a brown fig tree in a large pot, but have only managed to grow a lot of folage, missing the figs since I planted it 3 years ago. Any idea what I could do to improve things? I`m beginning to wonder if I should plant it out into open soil, but had been previously told to confine its root system. So, now I`m not sure to what actions to take to get some figs growing for next year. Any advice would be appreciated.

    1. Lovely Hubby reckons you might need to move it to a much bigger pot, or plant it in a brick lined hole at least a metre square. It HAS to be contained by something strong, Fig trees can seriously undermine the foundations or walls of a house.

So nasty tasting and destructive to buildings .... bad Fig trees :-(

  7. I love fig trees, even though figs aren't my absolute favourite thing. I just love the foliage and the shape of the branches. I'm thinking of putting one in my front garden, but I'm not sure if it's sunny enough. Is yours in full sun? I'm thinking maybe it is to have so much ripe fruit.

    1. It does get the sun all afternoon, and full sun for at least three or four hours a day, no wonder it's done well this year.

  8. I've only eaten figs once in Greece. Our hostess heated them with some sort of diced nut paste or bitter dark chocolate, they were scrumptious !

  9. I adore figs my tree produced fruit for the first time last season, although only got one a day for a couple of weeks, hbere's hoping for this year. Birds love them too!

  10. I don't think I've even tasted a fig? The shame....

Stupid question-are you taking one plant with you?

  11. Ooooh, I'll have figs any day. They are great with a buttered homemade bread. We used to have a large tree, but now there's not space.

They make delicious jam to have on your toast.
