Something's Been Sleeping in My Bed ......

In the distance a familiar face is lurking in the Veggie Patch, can you see him ...

.... Mr Hawkeyes, is back.

He used to guard the chickens at our old place, keeping away some of the large flocks of rooks we used to get stealing their food.  He's been languishing all neglected by the raised beds since we got here, we've never had the same scale of bird problem.   Yesterday I decided I needed his help ...

..... because something's been sleeping in my bed .... my Strawberry Bed that is.

For everything to be that squished and flattened out to that extent it just has to be one of the small deer we have roaming round here.  We've seen them leap all our fences with the greatest of ease.  We have Roe deer and a growing number of little Muntjac deer living in the woods that surround us.  We see them everyday cutting across the paddocks and even coming right up to the back door on occasion.  So which ever one of them it was the other night  will have got a shock when they came back last night, to find someone with big glaring eyes watching them.

It seems to have worked for now, there is no more damage this morning, and after I gave the plants a good drink yesterday some of them have recovered.  I'm going to stop by there on the way to feed the chickens and pick up all the damaged strawberries to add to their corn this afternoon.

    1. NOT if you're trying to grow your own fruit and veggies. They've broken a young apple tree and eaten virtually all the pears, and now my strawberries have fell victim and this is through two layers of fencing.

They are only nice to look at if they're not eating your food!!

  7. Did Mr Hawkeyes succeed in keeping rooks etc away from the poultry food? I think I'm needing something like that to keep them away from my duck food - wonder if it would scare blackbirds, too?

  8. There was a strange flattened patch of leaves at Exbury gardens when I visited. I wonder if it was deer ?
I gave all my strawberry plants away - slugs got 'em every time !

  10. Does that eye thing work with jack daws as we have them in plague proportions and they keep steeling all the chicken food!

    1. It's designed to work on any bird or animal that would see a predatory bird as a threat, so yes it should work on Jackdaws.

It did work against most birds for us at our last place ... although it didn't stop the Jackdaws nesting in the chimney!!
