No More Norman

Norman - The New Hampshire Red cockerel

~

Lovely Hubby had to do a very brave deed this morning, Norman our beautiful New Hampshire Red cockerel was limping yesterday, when he got up this morning it was very obvious that his leg was causing him a great deal of pain.

~
After jumping down from the henhouse he gave his usual loud and impressive cock- a -doodle- doo, and then took himself off to sit quietly. We could not let such a heavy bird suffer being only able to stand on one leg, especially when he already has problems walking, so he has been swiftly and humanely despatched. He will not be in a pie, Lovely Hubby has decided. I am so pleased.

The farm is a quiet place this morning, Caldwell is crowing and there is no answer.

  2. Aw. Rest in peace, Norman. My lady has had to put down a chicken friend and it's most definately not a fun thing to do. Thank you for ending any suffering Norman had with that bad leg.

  7. Thank you for all these lovely comments.

Knowing that you all understand our sad decision has been a great reassurance.

When you have animals, be they farm animals, birds or pets, you have a huge responsibility to make their lives as happy, safe and enjoyable as possible. That sometimes means difficult decisions have to be made.

    Thank you for understanding.

  10. Hi Sue, it's so sad when something like this happens. We also had a NHR rooster - he was called Gladys but thats another story! He died of a heart attack one morning. It's taken me until recently to be able to replace him. He was such a sweet boy.
Your mum popped in to say hi! Say hi back from me! x
