Cats and Street Performers

It seems cats and street performers have a lot in common .... put a bag down for a minute and you'll come out of the room to find it's already occupied.  Ginger just sat there peeking out for ages, then he decided he had better things to do, jumped out of the bag and went downstairs.

I think it was his stillness that reminded me of this photo I had taken with my phone last time I was in Reading, Berkshire with Lovely Hubby, a couple of weeks ago.

It took me a while to work out how they did this seemingly astonishing feat of balance.  They were there for all the time it took us to have our lunch, go for a coffee and get some shopping.  Barely moving a muscle save for the stretching of their fingers every now and then and blinking and smiling as the crowd took photos and dropped pound coins in their collection bucket.

There was visible space between the head and bottom of each person ... can you figure out how they did it?

  7. I fancy a large circular base and rods of iron up their clothes with little platforms for them to perch on.

    1. Absolutely spot on. We had just about worked it out for ourselves when a chap stood next to us started chatting to Lovely Hubby, it seems he was a welder and knew how it could be achieved with, as you say, platforms and metal rods.

Of course at first glance the 'person' on top looks very real ... but is in fact a lightweight model.

  9. I just cannot figure it out at all - maybe I could if I was actually there in front of them. Please put us out of our misery and explain it.
Typical cat to sit in a bag.

  12. Years ago, DH took one of our cats to work with him, she 'stowed away' in his black work bag, and emerged when he opened the bag at work to put his milk in the fridge!
He said he thought that the bag seemed to be a bit heavier than normal, but as she was a very small, dainty cat, the weight difference wasn't very noticeable.
I don't think he was best pleased at having to drive straight back home again, particularly as the only way to keep her safe in the car for the return journey was to put her back in the bag, and of course, she didn't want to go back in, so he 'donated' blood via her claws for his trouble! She was his 'baby' though, so they soon forgave one another!

  13. Do British children have "But my cat likes to hide in boxes" as a classic children's book too? I thought of it immediately I read this blog! Our cat loved brown paper bags, the more crackly the better. She'd make the bag crackle as she wiggled her back end before leaping out to (gently) grab a passer-by around the ankles. Wonderful memories today, thank you Sue!

  14. I grew up on a farm and been there my entire 57 years of life. I could not imagine being anywhere else! I raised my son on the farm as well. He said it was a great life experience. Thanks for the great article! I enjoyed it!

  15. Whenever we arrive home with shopping there is a fight between Bib, George & Pome about which cat will be "allowed" to hide in the shopping bags. Much hopping in aqnd out of bags ensues...
