Kale, Sweet Potato and Pot

I was in Tesco last week for a top up on Sparkling Water (yes, you know I'm addicted) when I spied some bargains on the reduced to clear shelves.

There were lots to be had actually but I was very restrained and only got a couple of things including these two bags of Curly Kale.  My plants were heavily picked from last week and while I have these in the freezer it will give them chance to recover.  Obviously they are very slow growing now the temperatures are so much lower and at just 55p a bag this little stash should keep me going for a while with my new Pesto, Kale and Pasta obsession.

I also decided to treat myself to this, it just looked so tasty.

It was really delicious, but I doubt I would ever pay the full price for it ... £6 ... gulp!!

But at £3.54 it was worth it, and I have kept the nice sturdy foil dish it was in to make my own version which will no doubt cost me much less to produce.

I should have read the ingredients list before I bought it though, it contained a lot of milk and milk products which was obvious when I woke up the next morning and was 'dawking doo by dose'.  Yes milk and milk products completely block up my sinuses, I really do need to learn my limits properly AND read labels better!!

Reverse Advent - Day 2

A little Laura Ashley pot that used to contain some of my jewelery before I bought my new jewelry/sewing box for Christmas.  Although it's very pretty it's not really needed, and someone else will no doubt love it even more than me.

    1. I should have read the ingredients list. When milk is in bold FIVE times that should have been a clue!! Serves me right ... it WAS delicious though :-)

  2. Obsessive Label reading was the reason I had to get glasses! When my eldest was diagnosed as coeliac, I read the label on everything. I'm more confident now, but I'm still horrified if I do read ingredient lists. It does look very tasty - just my mind of thing :) I'm going to try kale pakoras over Christmas. I'm hoping they'll be crispy?

    1. I've taken to keeping my glasses on the top of my head when I'm shopping, (obviously I didn't on this occasion), it's easy in Winter, not quite so in Summer when there are sunglasses up there too!!

  3. I'm addicted to soda water, so I bought a Soda Stream because I got tired of lugging bottles to and fro. :) I love that thing, I go through two 1 litre bottles a day. Combined with my filter tap, it is very cost effective for me, and no bottles to recycle.. :) Happy moments!

    1. We looked into buying a Soda Stream a while ago and worked out that the cost of it, plus the paying for bottles of gas and spare bottles would mean that we would not see a return on our money for something like 10 years.

I only buy the supermarkets value brand sparkling water and ten bottles last me at least a month so although we liked the idea of a Soda Stream for environmental reasons, it was not financially viable.

Although saying that, I do see that they are on special offer on Amazon at the moment, so I am tempted.

  4. The pie looks lovely - although very pricey!!

My offerings today are 2 printers and a photo album to the CS and a book passed on to me by a blogger being passed on to another blogger :)

    1. Well done :-) And I love that books whizz around blogland to be enjoyed over and over by like minded souls.

  5. Where on earth was the milk in that flan/pie, why did it need milk - or was it more of a quiche? So many questions? :-) and the proper price of £6 is mad!
Oh. I've now enlarged the ingredients pic. and can see - but still don't understand

    1. I think that's why I didn't pay much attention to the ingredients list, when I make a pie or quiche milk hardly comes into the equation.

  6. Sinus issues here too. We're trying lactose free milk at the moment. Out of interest Sue, is it the lactose that causes you the sinus problems or something else in the milk? We're still trying to figure it out in our house x

    1. It is the lactose. I am fine with lactose free or vegan cheeses and I use Almond milk when I want milk for something. The only dairy I can tolerate is yogurt and butter, as long as I don't have too much on any one day.

There are a surprising number of people who are lactose intolerant but continue to drink milk and use products containing milk not really knowing this. It's only when you stop having any milk in your diet for a while that you discover how clear headed you CAN be, it's amazing.

Adults tend not to have lactase in their bodies which is what is needed to digest lactose when you are a baby and reliant on your Mum's milk.

    2. Thanks for this. I'm going to try some other lactose free products but not sure where I can buy them. The lactose free milk is available in most supermarkets but I haven't seen cheese, yogurt etc. Getting enough calcium into growing teens is a concern so I don't want to eliminate dairy completely.

    3. I get mine from Tesco, they are usually near to the normal milk shelves on a separate display.

  7. My mother has anaemia and so stepdad puts a side order of spinach in lemon juice on virtually every meal. It is sharp, but does go down quite well when I've eaten there

    1. I eat quite a lot of spinach, I don't overly 'love' it but I do realise how good it is for me and if your Mum has anaemia it's a great idea for her to have it so regularly. I've never tried it with lemon juice!

  8. Have you tried goat or ewe's milk? I don't like either so quite understand if you don't.
We are label readers, not because of allergies but because of all the crap that is secretly going into our food.
Applaud your restraint on the reduced offers. It is mostly those that have money who can afford to strip the offer shelves leaving people who rely on them with less.

    1. No I haven't tried either of them yet, I should ... especially as we are thinking about maybe getting goats.

I only buy things from the offer shelves that I really need or would buy anyway, or in the case of the pie, that I fancy for my tea. To be honest I get annoyed with the locusts that just stand there loading everything into their trolleys or that snatch things from the assistant's hands as they are trying to put them on the shelves once reduced.

  9. The flan looks scrummy but £6 is a hefty price. I love sparkling water too but it has to be cold.

    1. If I drink tap water (ours is very good) it has to be cold, so we always keep a jugful in the fridge, but I can drink sparkling water at room temperature or cold, I think I'm just addicted to the bubbles :-)

  10. The best Christmas present I've given my husband (according to him) is a Soda Stream machine. He LOVES sparkling water and drinks it every day. I am not sure we save money using it as the refill gas cartridges are about $14 US. However, we do reduce waste (less plastic bottles) and he absolutely loves it. It might be a nice gift for "Santa" to treat you to.

  11. M and S were offering everyone a small glass of Buck's Fizz today and a chocolate crisp. Couldn't resist either and as a result I bought of bottle of Buck's Fizz. My favourite tipple is Tonic water and I have a glass every night.
