Channelling my Inner Nigella


I didn't fancy eggs for breakfast this morning, unusual for me but hey everyone needs a change every now and then.  I had avocados in the fridge that needed using up and I remembered the very start of Nigella's new series when she had avocados and radish on toast, and yes I had radishes in there too.


I didn't faff about with the exact recipe from the book, quick pickling the radishes and added bits and bobs to the avocado, I just kept it simple, and luckily only topped half of a piece of toast.


Of course it looked nothing like the picture in the book, I didn't have fancy pants toast either, just a cheap seeded loaf from Tesco.


I peeled the radishes a bit they had been in the fridge for a couple of days and were feeling sorry for themselves.  It looked fine and the first bite was pretty yummy, then as I ate more and more I started to feel decidedly bad.  

The last couple of times I have had a Nutriblast with avocado in it I have felt yucky, well yucky the first time and decidedly and very up-chuckingly yucky the second time, so much so that I was on the verge of putting the Nutriblast in the cupboard to ride out the Winter thinking it was the change of temperature making them not suit me anymore.  I now think I can be pretty confident that it is the avocado that is not suiting me.  I am sat here with all the symptoms of my foray into goose egg eating which left me in no doubt whatsoever that I am allergic to goose eggs, so now it would seem that I am also allergic to avocados.

As allergies are much worse than intolerances it pays to really listen to your body when the messages come over so loud and clear, and I am doing.  After trying to bring myself to like them after years of not liking them it would seem that my not liking them was instinctive in a way, so I have sat up and took notice.  I took the rest of the damn green things out of the fridge chopped them up (feeling very nauseous as I did so) and threw them unceremoniously to the chickens, who thought all their Christmasses had come at once and got stuck in with great gusto.

So I might have channelled my inner Nigella, but with decidedly yucky consequences.  

I hope the rest of the recipes in this book are better for me or it will be following this one .....


Reverse Advent - Day 3

A book that came highly recommended, but now I've read it I don't feel a need to keep it so it's off.  (And that's why they invented libraries!!)  Hopefully someone else will benefit.

  1. I have long ago stopped buying cookery books as after a while I usually gave up reading them. So far I have found quite a few of this series recipes on line. Good job you realised!

    The book seems to be promising, though as you say it's not worth it, right? Still, your breakfast looks really nice. I've had only a cup of green tea with a bun. Hope to read about your experience from the book.

    1. I read the book, didn't do the diet .... and still need to hide behind my cabbage ;-)

      A quick reaction to a food is usually your last warning that your body just can't tolerate something, so it's best to sit up and take notice, I intend to.

  4. It took me a while to realise that I feel ill after eating eggs. I'm not too bad eating a recipe with an egg in it, but for some reason when I eat scrambled, boiled or fried eggs, I feel really sick for hours afterwards. I can't eat red lentils, bicarb/baking powder or kiwi fruits (these make me feel like scratching my throat out!). Chocolate gives me migraines as does red cheese. Can't see the connection between any of these foods but the food intolerances are definitely becoming worse as I get older. Never mind, there's plenty of foods I can still enjoy.

  5. I have to be careful about certain things too. I am lactose-intolerant after 3 years of anti-biotics (a particularly useless Dr), and it would seem I have a leaky gut now so there are quite a few things which I have eaten all my life - but are now best avoided. I take Chlorella and Spirulina, which help a little, but need to revise my eating habits. At least you now know that it is the Avocado causing the problems and can use your Nutribullet again.

Not meaning to compare you to a cat Sue but 2 of mine will kill for a dish of milk and have no digestive problems so I tried Dusty with some (new kitten May) she drank it and whoops! the litter tray was dreadful! My own fault. Now she watches when the others get milk but never attempts to touch it.

    1. I have no problem with being compared to cat .... I do have green eyes after all ;-)

      I will follow Dusty's example and never attempt to touch an avocado again.

  7. I love eggs but can't eat scrambled - if I do, I start to feel sick half way through and have to leave it. Eggs in any other form are fine. Also I've given up chocolate (disappointingly) as I started to get headaches daily, lasting most of the day. I stopped eating chocolate last week and my head's been fine since. I know chocolate can be linked to migraines so I really do think this was the cause. Gutted isn't the word!!

  9. Thanks for the warning - I shall not try that recipe. I must say that although I am watching Nigella I find most of the recipes have too much sugar, too much salt, or too many ingredients which would moulder away in my store cupboard after one using in her recipe. Also, most of them are so fattening I can only think she starves the rest of the time.

  10. Oh dear - you're not having much luck food wise! As Fishcake says, though, at least avocado is usually easily avoided xs today

    Items leaving here today are a full carrier of small things for Operation Christmas Child, an outgrown pair of PJs to CS, some unwanted toiletries being donated and a couple more books being donated. 4 children means there's always plenty of stuff hanging around! :) x

  11. Avacados aren't good for chickens, can be toxic. 'No avocado flesh, pits or skins which contain the toxin persin, and according to the Merck Veterinary Manual: "Ingestion of avocado has been associated with myocardial necrosis in mammals and birds. Cattle, goats, horses, mice, rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, sheep, budgerigars, canaries, cockatiels, ostriches, chickens, turkeys, and fish are susceptible. Ingestion of fruit, leaves, stems, and seeds of avocado has been associated with toxicosis in animals; however leaves are the most toxic part."

    1. Ooops .... but don't panic they are still running around 24 hours later :-)

      I won't panic as I was also told when we first got birds years ago, that they would all keel over and die after they ate three full rhubarb plants, leaves, stalks and all, but they were fine. It turns out the poison in rhubarb leaves is actually a really goo wormer for chickens and they will only eat them if they need it.

      Well one things for sure there will be no more avocados here for them to get at in the future :-)

  14. Oh my, that is quite interesting. I love avacados and since I'm in California we have lots. Was it a Hass avacodo? Or the other kind. It's lighter in color and I don't like them at all. Maybe since it's not native to your area, and shipped it has something on it??

  16. I love avocado, but DH loathes them, so they're a rarity in our fridge!
    I absolutely cannot eat kiwi fruit, it used to make my lips and tongue tingle and itch, but I enjoyed the taste, so carried on eating them. It was only when I had a very bad reaction, and my tongue started swelling badly that I realised I was actually allergic! I rinsed and gargled with lots of water and took two differing antihistamine tablets which I carry for my hay fever, and the swelling diminished quickly, but I am very careful to avoid kiwis now!

    I have never made a comment on your blog before but I really enjoy reading it, especially hearing about your lovely animals. I felt I just had to comment about your suspected allergy of avocados. I have the same so I urge you not to eat them any more. I used to virtually overdose on them until one day I ate one and felt really sick and sweaty. I gave them a try about a week later and did feel a whole lot worse plus I was sick after eating it 10 minutes later and I got a nasty rash, which disappeared after about 24 hours. I am allergic to kiwis and nectarines and my doctor has advised me to stop eating avocados as it would appear I am allergic to them also. I had a mass of allergy tests at Guy's and there are also a lot more foods that I can affect me. I was advised not to eat any hybrid type fruit or vegetable such as a nectarine (its funny but I can eat both peaches and plums but not the hybridised nectarine). Also the specialist said kiwis and avocados are relatively "new" fruits having been developed within the last 50 years or so. Hope you don't have any more reactions and wishing you an allergy free yuletide.

  18. ohhh yes, most people don't listen to their bodies, many of our dislikes are for that very reason, usually allergic or intolerant, most will say it's an "acquired taste" pffft! not likely, there's usually a good reason for not liking some foods

    1. I have very specific allergies/intolerances to certain foods. I have never really done a total elimination diet other then Phase One of the Harcombe diet (which did make me feel brilliant), so I cannot say for certain.
