Monday Morning

This mornings harvest from the polytunnel was slightly different, yes I got the usual colander of vegetables to add to the bits and bobs that are lurking in the veggie drawer of the fridge, ready to make a big pot of soup for the weekday lunches.  But this time I also came back with a tray full of used plant labels.

All year when I pick the last of something or chuck a tray of something that has died or not taken well into the compost bin, I retrieve the plastic labels, of which I have rather a lot .... thanks Dad.  I don't bother to wash them there and then but I save them up, and now is the time to give them all a wash, attack them with a pencil rubber and have them fresh and ready for re-use in the polytunnel.  It might only save a pound or two each year but it's these little things that add up.

They are drying on the Aga at the moment, along with the tea towel and facecloths that managed to stay on the washing line.

... the rest of the towels that were also out on the line in warm wind we have here today are back in the washing machine.   The strong gusts that have been coming every now and then were two much even for my storm pegs.  Luckily I was in the kitchen prepping the vegetables for the soup and nipped out to throw the trimmings to the chickens just a few minutes after pegging out the towels.  I did an almost comedy double take at the virtually empty washing line.  The towels were lying resplendent in the mud just outside Chicken World with pegs scattered all around.

It definitely feels like a Monday morning!!

  1. Oh no would hate my washing to fall in the mud. I am still tumble drying clothes but cant wait until I hang them on my new long washing line and not a whirly one :-) I have the same veg pegs as you I think its great to recycle them as you say all money is good if its saved no matter how small. Have a lovely week, dee x

  2. Yes, I save and scrub my plastic labels clean too. As you say, it's the little things that count. Somehow saving pennies is really satisfying!
I'm longing to be able to hang my washing out, but it just doesn't seem to dry out there yet. Fortunately I have a large airing cupboard so havent needed to tumble dry anything.

  3. Rubbing alcohol will sometimes remove even so-called indelible marker pen. Sitting here in the middle of 20-some inches of snow from the blizzard that hit the United States over the weekend, I envy you your Aga!

    1. I only write with pencil now, every single sort of pen I tried faded in the sunlight, I've found pencil is the only thing that can last a complete growing season.

Stay warm, it looked brutal when I saw your snow on the news. xx

    1. They are currently draped around the house. We don't have or want a tumble dryer so they languish on the airer or switched off radiators until it is their turn to go on the Aga, it doesn't take long for them to dry once they get on there :-)

  7. Hate it when that happens or worse - the line breaks.

  8. What a pain to have to wash towels twice. It's still far too damp to peg things out here so my tumble dryer is in use almost daily. Roll on the spring!

  13. Oh no how frustrating. I'm still putting my washing in the dryer but hope it won't be long until I can peg out. Might take a bit longer though as our move is taking us back up North from the south of England

  14. I have a Sheila Maid on a pulley above my Aga - it is the best investment I ever made.

  15. I'm glad that your are reusing the plant labels - not because it saves some money, but because there is just too much plastic in this world. When it's around, it is good to be able to reuse it before it goes into the recycling. Can't wait to see what will grow once the season gets underway!
