Toasters, Cushions and Lemons

Remember way back in July when I did THIS post about our toaster dying a death with an almighty bang.  Well after emails to the company that made it they asked us to send off the label from the old toaster ...... and then I heard nothing more.  Until the other day, when there was a knock on the door and a delivery guy handed me a package that contained a replacement.

What is it these days, no letters, no communication,  I mean I don't want to sound ungrateful but a note would have been nice, even just one explaining that this was my replacement and  apologising for my last one dying it's premature death.

I had all but given up hope after all this time and was happy to stay using our Aga toaster bat thingy and keep my nice clear bit of worktop as it was, so I'm thinking that maybe the new toaster can lurk in the back of the cupboard, ready to spring into action if and when the Aga is ever switched off.

I like my crunchy Aga toast so much better.

Our younger son Jason came for a bit of recuperation and looking after last weekend, after seriously hurting his foot and ankle ..... the dogs decided a prone human on the sofa made a great new cushion and kept him company for most of the weekend, it's a good job he loves them all   :-)

And in the spirit of Stoptober I took the two lemons that were rolling round in the fridge drawers and open froze them, then they were stacked in a tub and put back into the freezer ready to flavour glasses of water whenever we need them.

Every little helps.

Sue xx

  1. What a lovely picture, I love the way you make use of any packaging for the freezer, I always like a slice of lemon in some sparkling water, I have just got a new freezer and am lookin to fill it up and save money, it will help me use everything up,can I ask do you blanch vegetables for the freezer or put them in as they are?

    1. Yes, those were the trays my fish fillets came in, they do great service as open freezing trays then when they get a bit old I relegate them to the shed to use as seed trays, waste not want not. After all when we pay for the product we are also paying for the packaging .... we may as well use it.

If I am going to use veggies quite soon after freezing I will just pop them straight into the freezer, I've found blanching helps preserve more of the flavour and texture of the veggies for a longer period of being frozen if you have the time to do it.

  6. I haven't commented for ages but just had to slow down for one second and say what a fabulous picture that is of your son! you could never get dogs to pose like that if you asked them to - it was a magic moment! I had a similar toaster experience with my iron by the way, you can't wait for an iron and I had replaced mine and forgotten that a faulty one was sent back - about 6 weeks later a new one appeared on my doorstep - it even took me a moment to remember why! In my case I was given a refund as well so really am very grateful!

  8. is it really possible to freeze lemons>? Do they unfreeze ok? I have never thought to try it but will now as we have a lemon tree in the garden just heaving with fruit!

    1. Yes, I've been doing it this way for years and they keep for ages too, I found some over a year old at the bottom of the freezer when we moved and they were fine.

I usually do slices but I'm thinking of doing some wedges next time, they would be handy for squeezing lemon juice and zesting if frozen that way.

I don't tend to 'unfreeze' them, I just drop them in my drink lemon and ice cube all in one :-)

  10. Doglet hot water bottles, you can't beat that when under the weather! Comfort from both points of view.
I enjoy lemon in hot water with a spoonful of our own honey to start the day, I hadn't thought to freeze the ones that are 'going' a bit. An excellent notion.

  11. I love the picture of your son with the dogs comforting him. Hope he is better soon. My husband was working on the roof yesterday and fell off the top of the ladder. We spent most of the day in hospital while they considered operating but fortunately decided not to, just stitched him up and sent him home. One of the dogs was pretty traumatised by it all and isn't letting my husband out of her sight today!

  12. I seldom have fresh lemons in the house, they go off too quickly, I stock up with fresh organic lemons when they are on offer, I then spend a couple of hours zesting them, packing the zest into ice trays, two cubes are just right for lemon meringue pie, some of the remaining lemon body's are then sliced and frozen for use in drinks, and some of the lemons just cut in half and frozen for squeezing on trout or salmon, or any fish that you are oven baking. No waste and always a lemon of some sort on hand.
