Mavis Joins Us

On the 29th December late in the evening during a heavy rainstorm there was a knock at the door.  A very wet and bedraggled man stood there with a desperate look in his eyes, asking him in out of the rain a rapport was quickly made between him and Lovely Hubby as he recognised LH's accent, it turned out they both knew a chap in Scotland famous for being excessively tall.  (Where do men get these off the wall conversations from?)

Anyway after a few moments chat out came the reason for the late night call, earlier he had found a very wet and scared Jack Russell wandering on the main road, he took her home with him and started phoning around, someone mentioned that the new folks on the hill had a Jack Russell and could it be ours?  So he came a calling.  When we answered the door with our lovely Rosy very much in evidence his face fell slightly, but we went out to his car with him to see the little lady in question.  She was a sorry sight with scared eyes and a shivering body.

As he said there was sadly no way he could keep her we said we would think about adopting her if her real owner couldn't be traced.  His daughter put an appeal on Facebook and after a day and a half her owner was tracked down, Brian phoned him immediately and his response was 'keep her, I don't want her' and the phone was put down.  He called him back for some basic information about her but not much was forthcoming.

Well as you can see from these pictures she is now ours.  We couldn't let her go anywhere else.  The pictures above show the first meeting with our dogs, she was very brave, but that scared look stayed with her.  It had almost disappeared by next morning but then as we loaded all the dogs into the back of the car for a trip to the beach she once again started shivering and she huddled into the seat cushion not knowing what was ahead of her ... poor thing.

Returning from the walk and being towelled dry she made at once for her bed and slept off the trauma of thinking she was about to be taken somewhere else.

And as this photo taken last night shows she is relaxing into a home where dogs are wanted, are cuddled, are treated well and kept warm and cosy.  She is losing her scared eyes and relaxing into her new home.

She watches what goes on but with an interested rather than fearful expression ...

... and she plays.

Joining in and even initiating games with the other two, it's lovely to watch.

I had to do something totally girly and buy her a waterproof jacket, seeing her on that first doggy walk soaked through and totally bedraggled and seeing just how thin she was under that coat of wiry Jack Russell fur I knew too many walks in this horrible weather would surely give her a chill and we don't want that ...

... and anyway she look gorgeous in it.

I'm looking forward to the day when she grows out of it.  Having her checked over at the vets on Friday we weighed her, she weighs just over 4kgs, the vet agrees that as a small boned Jack Russell, unlike our Rosy who is much chunkier, she should be about 6 - 6.5kgs so we have a bit of slow building up to do and it something we can do very well in our house.

Mavis ...... welcome to our world, I hope you're here to stay for a long, long time..

I've just had an email asking me if her name was always Mavis and if not do I know what her name was before ... her name was 'Pit'. I have nothing to say on that one except to say it's not her name anymore ..... she's Mavis and she's already answering to it !!

  7. That is exactly how it should happen, a dog should come to those who will care just when the time is right. Both of you are lucky and she is a perky looking little girl. I know that she will be as good as the other 2 soon.

  8. That`s such a heart warming story! A fantastic start for 2014. Every cloud has an eventual silver lining. The loss of your cat was bad, but doesn`t this little dog cheer your heart, too? I`m so glad for you all. And I`m sure you will have great fun seeing this dog improve and come out of her shell for you. She is a lucky dog to have found such a caring home! Best of luck to all of you for 2014!!!

  9. Sue, that is a lovely thing to do. Well done. We did the same with a black and white tom cat just over a year ago. He visited our little Cornish Rex, Lola ( also rescued), in the garden. It took a year of food in the garden and titbits at BBQ's to get him to be friendly. After a year of running from us, he suddenly ran to me for a fuss, and then moved in the next day. He had to have "the chop", and be de-fleaed. Now he is the cuddliest, gentlest cat I have ever met. I hope your new pooch is a great addition to your household. Happy New Year. Bev.

  11. Sue, I am so proud of you and your husband for giving Mavis a loving home, I too have a rescue named Sparkle. She was the same nervous way as Mavis when she first came into my home and once she realized that she was here to stay - it was her "forever" home, she became very attached to me and I to her.
I have no doubt that you all will have many years of happiness living together - Congratulations!!!

  12. Bitter cold here, with snow. The stray cat that seemed to come and go this summer was spotted sitting on the dutch door in the barn yesterday, so immediately went down with a big pan of food and water...he (she?) will not be seen, but will be made welcome and fed..and maybe become tame.
Little Mavis is a dear and very lucky to have found you...I could easily become a crazy cat/dog lady!

  13. Aww, she is beautiful! Labs are my first love but I have a wee soft spot for JRTs. Mavis, you've found a very special home :-)

  14. Oh well done you and your LH! She looks right at home with you. She's like my Treacle - wiry hair and wiry build :-)
I have utter contempt for her former owner though - what a shocking thing to do.
AND... you've just thoroughly proved an old saying....'new house, new baby' - LOL!

  15. Well done Sue! You have a big heart but we knew that anyway. We took on a sort of 'rescue'. We had bought one pup from a breeder; when she was 10 months old, the breeder called us to say she didn't want to keep her litter sister because she was no use for showing or breeding. It took a while for her to settle in and she's been a bit of a handful in many ways, but we couldn't have said no and she's turned out to be very affectionate. Looking forward to hearing how things go.

  16. Ahhh, bless her! And bless you too! (I've always had a soft spot for jacks, especially the wire coats!)

  17. Ooh goosebumps at this story, Sue. From the coincidence of both men having a link, despite meeting in Wales, to how they came to call on you, saw you were not the owners, however were certainly meant to be the owners to be. Wishing Mavis lots of love in her new, wonderful home. All the best to you all. love Claire

  18. How wonderful, a new family member. It was fate that you found each other.
She will be loved and cherished in your lovely new home. A joyful start to the new year after the sadness.

  20. I'm so glad that you took her in (not that there would ever be any doubt about that!) She must think she has gone to live in a Palace as I think her last "home" wasn't up to much. I hope she soon looses that scared look entirely and it is gone never to return as she learns about love and cuddles with you.

  24. How lovely for her that she has found such a wonderful home. It sounds as though her previous home was probably horrible, some people shouldn't be allowed dogs. How lucky for her that she appeared at your door. Bless you both for taking her in.

  27. She's gorgeous.....and I love the 'not impressed but resigned to it' look that Suky is giving her in the first pic! Good that they're all getting on so well now though......and she looks so safe, comfy and warm on LH's leg (by the way, your woodburner must throw out a lot of heat for him to be in shorts at this time of year!!)

    1. Strangely enough she always leaves a little bit of dried food in her bowl for later on and quite unbelievably so has Suky, the dog that usually hoover anything edible or inedible up on sight. Wonders will never cease!!

  35. I'm glad Mavis now has a happy loving home since her former owner was so callous. It sounds like she was probably abandoned on purpose. Would it be worth reporting her former owner since you have contact details?

It's always great to watch them settle in and one day you can't remember how it was before. Karma can be a bitch but when she's nice, she can be lovely too. 51. Oh Sue, she is beautiful! How lucky that she has come to you! (For all of you). I too, would have taken her in a heartbeat.
My Jake is small like her, and he weighed 6kg when I rescued him in April. He now weighs 6.5 and has put on muscle and 'body' not fat really. But it's made a huge difference to his appearance.
She'll soon be upto her beautiful self and looking even more gorgeous than she does now.
    Bless you all. Xx

  61. I am not at all surprised by the number of comments this point has received. Thank God Mavis found her way to a kind man who somehow sensed that she belonged with you. Such a huge heart you have to take her in. How awful of her owner not to want her, and well done you for not forcing her back upon an owner like that. She is adorable. x
