I've Come a Long Way

I did something this morning on the way to the paddock with the dogs that made me realise what a long way I've come in this 'new life in the country'.

Yes I grow our food, (I'll have to take a more up to date photo of the net tunnel it's looking nothing like this at the moment), we are pretty self sufficient in veggies at the moment, it's just the peppers that have failed me completely this year.

We have lots of our own and our neighbours fruit nestled in the freezer ready for use.

I've not had to buy an egg in years.

I seem to be best friends with one of the sheep :-)

I evict spiders from the house, okay with the use of a jug and cover, but hey years ago I would have just screamed and ran.  I reuse, recycle and re-invent all sorts of useful and helpful things around the place.  I remove dead chickens from the house when nature has helped them off this mortal coil.

And then this morning .....

... I carefully extricated a big dead rabbit that had got itself completely stuck in the fence, possibly after a mad dash across the road in the dark.  I hope it died quickly poor little thing.

But I managed, with a struggle to get it's poor soft body out of the fence and throw it over the fence onto the grass verge where hopefully it will go to feed the wildlife.  I didn't want it to decompose in the fence and perhaps risk our dogs eating it at a later date when I wasn't around to tell them to 'leave it' which they did straight away this morning.

Touching dead rabbits with my bare hands ..... yes I've come a long way!

  1. Your new life in the country really is inspiring and you should be really proud of what you have done, not only to the house but in the garden and grounds as well. I bet the neighbours breathed a sigh of relief when they could see that you are 'can do people'

  3. Well done on the produce prizes. I struggled to get a bird out of the greenhouse today with all that flapping going on!!!

  5. Well done.
In Spring something started eating a new rose I'd planted, probably a rabbit. So we put a fence of chicken wire around it. Then one morning we came down and found a dead snake.. it had obviously not realised just how fat it had become. Maybe it was that eating the rose? A Winnie the Pooh moment.

    1. I doubt it ... but I have cornered one and told Rosy to 'get it' which she always does with great gusto. I guess I'll always have to have a cat and a Jack Russell while I live in the country :-)

    1. Maybe this is not the place, but I've never had to do that ... how do you do it humanely? I should imagine wringing little necks is a bit twiddly!!

  10. Well done. The spider and other insect removal I can handle, however dead bunnies, or chickens would have me crying and huddled in a corner.

    God bless.

    1. I felt much more sorry for the rabbit than me, poor thing. Imagine making a mad dash across the road and escaping being flattened, as so many are on the main road that passes our hillside, only to choose the wrong part of the fence to dash through. It went through the narrowest stands of wire at the bottom hard up against a stem of Laurel bush and got itself completely stuck fast. It was a lovely rabbit as well :-(

  14. That's country life for you! Although I would love to live in the country, I think I'd still make use of my husband for the nastier bits and bobs. LOVE the sheep photo - how come he/she's your new friend? (Have you been supplying treats??!!). Kind regards, Louise S, Cheshire.
