Grey Wet Days

It's been raining here pretty much non-stop for the last week, the forecast says it's going to be pretty much raining for the next week and a half ... that's as far ahead as it goes ... so it could be longer.  We are currently on a yellow rain warning.

The good news is our water harvesting system and the soakaway is working a treat.  The drains we laid on the main road are doing the highways agency a favour in stopping the usual huge puddles from forming all along the edge of the road that caused problems for the cars speeding past on this stretch. they are valiantly carrying the water away into the mains drainage system.

The bad news is the gloom is getting me down, I am sitting in the office here typing this with the main light on and the desk lamp to illuminate the keyboard.  It's also lonely when I do venture out, Rosy usually comes with me for chicken duties, but not for the last few days.  I did the doggy walk with only Mavis for company, the other two refused point blank to venture out away from the overhang of the conservatory roof, I left them sat there when I went with Mavis and they were still there when we got back.  Suky is not a wet weather Pug!!

The chickens are mostly invisible in Chicken World, sheltering in and under the henhouse, in the covered over Eglu and in the rainy day shelter that we built for them.  The only time they venture out is when they hear a noise from the house or see me in the doorway, then they care less about getting wet and more about the potential of treats from the house or the corn bin.

This morning I came down to this, Ginger, Suky and Mavis sharing the bed in the conservatory ...

... and Rosy in her own bed in the kitchen,  she only shares when she wants to.

I did a workout to one of my Dvds this morning to lift my mood and warm me up after the soggy doggy walk, it worked a treat, and now I think I've earnt the right to sit at the computer for a while and read other folks blogs.  I think I'll start with those of you on the other side of the world..... you seem to have pinched our sunshine ... enjoy!!    ;-)

  1. This miserable grey weather doesn't do much to our happy levels at times does it! I have to say, I'd quite like to join Ginger, Suky and Mavis in their bed, it looks mighty cosy and snug! Hope the rain eases off for you for at least a little while :) x

  2. I know what you mean Sue! I lay in bed this morning listening to the wind blowing the rain against the windows and I really did NOT want to get out of my snug 'nest'!
Everything seems permanently wet lately, and it doesn't inspire me to do much of anything, apart from perhaps curling up with a good book!
I've just checked our long range forecast, and we're supposed to be getting a smattering of sunshine this Thursday, Sunday and Friday next week, so, something to look forward to!!!

  4. I think maybe, we've forgotten how bad a prolonged period of rubbish weather feels! It's not wet here today, but so grey :( I'm struggling with motivation - well done on the DVD! I'm more likely to bypass that and just sit and read!

    1. True, we were quite spoilt through most of October with the mild weather and sunny days, now it feels so mild, but wet and very windy.

The Dvd worked a treat, I did it again this morning and I'm raring to go ... the only trouble is the dogs are refusing to venture out with me for walks ..... only Mavis is daft enough to get soaked to the skin with Mum ;-)

  5. Very windy and cold up here and the blooming boiler decided to break down last night so no heating! First the shower, then the boiler, let's hope things don't come in threes. The engineers came out first thing and only one small part needed replacing thank goodness. We could definitely do with some sunshine to give us all a boost.

Sue, do you find your dog beds get damp underneath after the dogs have slept in them? We have fabric beds laid on laminate flooring, and one of the beds always feels a bit damp underneath in the morning. I air it outside when I can. Lovely pictures of the animals x

    1. Yes, they do .... especially when three animals have been snoozing the night away all in one bed. I usually put them on top of the Aga for a while to dry and air them, or sometimes just lean the cushion pads up against the wall while the animals snooze on the sofa instead.

Even the plastic style beds like Rosy is in in the picture tend to get a moist patch underneath. I wipe them out whenever I hoover the cushion just with an antibacterial wipe, the dogs aren't so keen on the smell I guess but I prefer it ;-)

  6. It hasn't been too wet the last 36 hours in Essex but its been windy and grey. Rain tonight apparently. Oh how I long for the sunshine. Can you ask the other side of the world for our sun back please!

  7. Hello dear Sue! I am sorry that the grey weather has sunk your spirits but I must admit I am so jealous of both your rain and the green of your landscape. I live in California, USA and we are in year five of a severe drought. I miss rain and the cool temperatures and verdant landscapes that attend it. The forecasters have predicted a wet winter but, so far, it hasn't appeared. Wishing you well!

    1. Only sunken temporarily .... hours not days :-)

Oh I wish we could send you some rain, it seems to be all or nothing and no balance in the weather recently doesn't it.

  8. Have you tried using a 'light box' to chase away the 'winter blues'? I get very down during these dark damp days even with a daily walk. Gets to be severe depression some years, only in the winter time. So have been using a special S.A.D light box for several years now, helps a great deal

    1. I'd forgotten that I had inherited my mum's 'sad lamp'. I've just dug it out from the spare room, it's going to get used after dinner!
We actually got about forty minutes of watery sunlight this afternoon, even that tiny bit made me feel a bit brighter!

    2. Don't forget that you only use it in daylight hours otherwise it sends your 'body clock' out of kilter.

    3. I really don't need anything like that, although I do understand that some people do.

I would rather go for a brisk walk and re-connect with nature. A walk through our paddock and woods or along the prom is all I need to top up the 'feel good factor', as long as the rain isn't lashing down sideways of course that is :-)

  10. My 2 lurchers have been concertina- ing themselves up on the doorstep this week when I try to let them out into the rain and do the quickest wees possibly when they really have to go!
The chickens are unimpressed but the ducks don't mind :)

  14. Sue, I think we have had such a lovely Autumnal spell during October and now, we are suffering for it. My mother always used to call this time of year 'the dark days before Christmas' - lights on all day, hardly any sunshine, lists of things to do for Christmas and no will to do any of them.
Give that dear pug a hug from me.

    2. But isn't snow bright and white? Better than the damp gloom of the fog?

  16. It was over 30C here in Tasmania yesterday, hot by our standards. And a bit early for summer.
There has been no rain this spring. Instead of our normal 40mm to fill the dam for the year we have had about 5mm. We had to buy a truck load of water for the house tank.
The bush fire warning signs are up early this year and there was the smell of smoke on the wind last night.
I haven't seen a snake yet, but they don't worry me. It is the hot and dry with no water and the threat of bushfires from now until at least April.
Please send rain and I'll send sun :)

  17. Spring is here, but just a few minutes ago, the sky went black and rain was pouring. Now it stopped but....we don´t know.
Loving to see your pets and read your blog!

  18. These comments are like a global weather forecast!

Lovely sunshine here & should be today. We had quite a bit of rain last week, good for the garden & makes it easy to pull the weeds out!
It looks like more rain tomorrow & Thursday.
Cheer up Sue it's nearly Christmas!

    1. They are aren't they. It's nice to find out what weather is happening all over the world.

Christmas is looming close for sure ... they were playing Jingle Bells in Asda the other day. I found myself singing along and that's when I realised what they were playing !! Yup, the season of mass consumerism and turkey massacre is nearly here :-(

  21. Sending you sunshine and warmth from So. Calif. Please send us some of your rain in exchange! We are in our 4th or 5th year of drought! Love seeing your dogs all cuddled together!

  22. From Margie in Toronto - November over here is usually the same, a very grey, wet month and quite depressing after the lovely Fall colours - but this year we have been incredibly lucky and the past few months have been extra sunny and warm - and today was a beautiful sunny day. We are supposed to get a bit of rain the next couple of days so perhaps our luck has run out. Just keep warm and cozy on days like today - lots of tea, a warm kitchen, and a lovely book might do the trick! :-)

    1. All our pets are taught to respect 'family'.

We have successfully had tiny piglets brought in to warm up and poorly hens in the house with the dogs and cats, and had chicks running around that Ginger the cat, and Rosy the killer Jack Russell know not to eat as they are family. In fact once Rosy licked a wild mouse that I had rescued from her and Gingers hunting foray and let me release it back into the woods without chasing after it because I had said "Aww, nice baby mouse" and stroked it.

I have always found that animals are intelligent enough to know the extent of the pack and treat each other with a level of respect.
