Tidying Up the Inbox

When I have got simply no energy left for rummaging through cupboards or hoicking out boxes I sit at the computer and blog hop, a mug of coffee warming my hands and snoozing doggies at my feet it's a pleasant way to spend an hour, and a much needed rest after cleaning out the henhouse and walking the dogs around the paddock in the snow.

To make myself feel virtuous and as though I have still accomplished something useful in my mission to declutter our lives, I have taken to re-considering a lot of the emails that are landing in my in-box with alarming regularity since the new year began.

It's as though everyone is demanding my attention to look at their products, asking that I click through to websites to peruse their wares and offering me the chance to win competitions that will reward me with more 'stuff'.

Well I must have unsubscribed to around a hundred various companies over the course of the last three weeks and still I am getting the odd new one, this morning's was from Ecover.  Yes, I use some of their products, but NO I do not want to read about their stuff in my own in-box ... than you very much.

So this morning one more ...

... and hopefully one less email to read through next week.

And THE most annoying thing of all is the companies that then send you an email asking if the unsubscribe was a mistake and would you like to re-subscribe.

  1. I'm with you, Amy...Hubby lets them continue to come in and doesn't take the time to unsubscribe. Really, if I say unsubscribe, I mean it! Not only are you decluttering your house, you are also decluttering your email! Good job....

  2. I know what you mean. It's difficult when blog hopping though. When I find one I really like, to stand a chance of finding it again, do I subscribe? I too have been pruning my subscriptions, everybody and their Dad seems to find my email address and sends me missives

I am seriously considering going ex-directory on the phone too, I am SO fed up of cold calls. It used to be a big deal to go ex-directory, and I wanted to stay in the telephone book so friends could find me. By who uses the telephone directory these days!

  3. Good job on clearing out those messages in your inbox. I really need to unsubscribe to a few as well.

    God bless.

  4. Good for you, taking the time now will eliminate tons of annoyances later. This is one area that I am super diligent. And I never subscribe to blogs. I use FEEDLY to page through them quickly. It keeps them all together in one place so I can look at them when I choose, and absolutely out of my inbox.

    1. I do subscribe to some of my favourite blogs, some of which are on my sidebar and some aren't and it takes a lot to make me unsubscribe from them.

So I have enough in my in box each day with work emails, family emails, blog subscriptions and comments on all my blogs which come through as emails as well, without any junk and spam. So I'm making it a priority to get rid of all the ones I don't want to make the ones I do want easier to access.

  5. Lesley - Being ex-directory doesn't stop the junk calls, we've always been ex-directory but still get far too many of these.

But you're right Sue, some of these companies seem oblivious to "Unsubscribe", most of them I don't remember subscribing to anyway.

  6. And you want to be careful when removing your name from lists too. When I closed my business I notified my wholesalers I was done, but catalogs kept coming. so I signed up with a company who 'guaranteed' the catalogs would stop - and some of them did, but in the process I received dozens more from companies I had never even heard of - at least by not ordering I have managed to get off of those lists - but it has taken over a year. What a waste of time, energy, and trees!

  7. I'm still decluttering. 11 years of clutter takes a while to shift. I've now moved on to the paperwork but I wonder if you can tell me how many years of bank statements I should keep? The house feels much more spacious and tidy after the initial clear out, and several neighbours have been delighted with books and toys which we've passed on to their children and grandchildren.

    1. It's usually reckoned to be 6 years.

    2. For our business I keep 6 years, for personal zero. Bank statements are always available to download either at home or the bank can do it for you.

    3. If you don't do online banking you have to pay the bank to get additional statements for personal banking. It's better to keep them for the 6 years.

  8. Be careful with Google maps too. Once on, very difficult to remove - I was shown at the WRONG address, as having an antiques shop, which I don't have and never had. I was worried about potential target for burglaries etc, for both us and our neighbour, so emailed Google, and glad to say it has now been removed.

  9. My computer is groaning under the weight of junk emails so I really need to get on with emptying my inbox. It is ridiculous the amount of unwanted emails that come through. I get really annoyed with companies selling on our details.

  10. Be careful - by saying you were having a rest you could be admitting to RELAXING!!!!!

  11. You are reminding me to unsubscribe from a few enewsletters. One thing I do occasionally is delete old sent mail from email accounts.

  12. About 90% of my inbox is full of this junk, most of which I never subscribed to in the first place. I feel your frustration. Enjoy your nice tidy inbox :)

  13. I unsubscribed the emails from our Theatre. They never have anything on that I want to see.
