A 'WTF' Moment ... and then ANOTHER One!!

Mum gave me her copy of the free Tesco magazine the other day to have a read before it went in the recycling.  I was merrily flicking through the pages when I came upon this advert.

Has the world gone mad!!

To buy a box of four cups of takeaway coffee just so you can leave your door with a cup in your hand is madness, well in my book it is.  If you need to leave the house clutching a cup of coffee then make one with your usual coffee in a thermos cup, or if you really must, buy one takeaway coffee and then re-use that cup over and over ..... don't fall for this mad marketing ploy.

They are currently on offer at Tesco at £1.99 and £2.29 and that's with 50% off, yes I guess that's cheaper than getting a takeaway but don't forget you are boiling your kettle to add to the cost of this drink, why not just boil the kettle anyway open your usual jar of coffee, get a spoonful or two out and make a drink yourself to take away with you and save yourself a small fortune.

A few pages later I came upon this Homity pie style recipe and as it looked so delicious I read through the recipe properly ....

... my second WTF moment in five minutes!!

To make this they tell you to buy a pack of ready made shortcrust pastry, dice it up and put it and some cheese in your food processor then pulse to combine the two, then bring it all together to make a ball of pastry and then roll it out.

Am I missing something here .... while you have your food processor out why not just put flour, fat and a pinch of salt in it and make your own pastry from scratch adding the cheese at the breadcrumb stage and then a touch of water to bring it all together.

I finished the magazine ... and then placed it quickly in the recycling bin before going to lie down in a darkened room before I went completely mad.

  1. It seems the era of take away coffee is on the rise. It's like it's trendy to walk around with a cardboard cup ! Another sign that life is just too busy; if you want a coffee make time for one !

  2. Sue my dipstick husband bought these as a treat to cheer me up after my disastrous Abakhan trip the other month. He thought it was a ceramic one for whatever reason only known to him I'm far to cheap to buy things like this so my mood was not improved one bit. And I burnt my tongue! I'm snorting at the pastry idea it's made my day xx

  3. We buy similar coffees to these when we are travelling and have no facilities to make our own. Yes, they are a bit extravagant but considerably cheaper than a motorway service coffee shop. They are also a godsend when you're in the middle of nowhere in France and need a coffee hit. Gerri, Brittany

    1. I just wondered where do you get your hot water from when travelling....just can't imagine a coffee shop in the services supplying you with hot water to make your own coffee? Also Would taking a flask of coffee not be cheaper making it before you set out? Would stay warm for hours

  4. Some fat cat sitting in a board room is paid mega £'s to think up these ideas. Pure marketing, inventing new stuff that no one actually needs. Walking around with a cardboard cup of coffee is totally bonkers.

  5. And to add to the gnashing of teeth about the coffee - take away cups are massive pollution issue. Make coffee yourself in a re-usable cup!

  6. Oh Sue, I'm so disappointed that I wont see you on the Llandudno prom walking the dogs with coffee cup in hand - think how trendy you would look!!

  7. Carrying your own reusable take-away cup is the norm in Wellington, and most places offer a discount on the coffee if you 'bring your own'

  10. I wonder whether a mug of tea would have the same cache as coffee? I think not. What is it about coffee that makes it 'cool'! I think it looks decidedly naff to be seen clutching a carboard carton of the stuff. We have a 'free' one each week in Waitrose (for loyalty card customers) but we take it to the car and drink it there before going home. I'd not buy it, but of course, we pay for it in the groceries we buy. We're not daft enough to think that Waitrose are that generous. But I saw a advert for this on TV and thought to myself "has the world gone mad!" too. Where it used to be clutching bottles of water, it's now coffee. What next, I wonder? Can't we go around with free hands?

  12. I hadn't noticed the coffee ad but I did see the recipe and my mag ended up in recycling too.

  13. Tesco also sell food processors, which as we all know, are absolutely essential when making pastry. ;-p

  14. I once read that you know you're impatient if making a cup of instant coffee takes too long!

All of this "convenience food" and its packaging is nuts.

    1. Other cultures daily sit and enjoy a lovely coffee or espresso usually with company. Dear i say its the English that are 'too busy' to sit and relax and enjoy good food and drink. Other cultures manage it well and yet they have the same 24 hours we do. Our work ethic is work work work no time to wait no patience so busy and the marketing have caught onto this and as such stupid paper cups on the go are born and some of us buy into the idea instead of sitting back and thinking if i am too busy to wait for a cup of coffee then life needs to change! Relax more people dont buy into convenience

  15. The mountain of takeaway cups is an enormous problem for landfill along with instant nappies. DH asked for a thermos cup to take to The Men's Shed and that's what our daughter bought him for his birthday today. What a day for a Scotsman to have his birthday!! Catriona

    1. At least instant nappies are useful for people who cannot use the reusable ones etc. Paper cups for coffee ok on the go from a coffee shop...but on the go from home is ridiculous!. Am with you. I use a flask!

  16. I won't knowingly buy anything from the above photo-ed multinational based in Switzerland. You can choose your own reason for this decision.
I completely agree with all the previous statements. Helen in France

  17. Even my 17 year old is rolling her eyes :) The pastry is truly ridiculous. But of course Tesco is just catering for busy mums who are intimidated by cooking from scratch, not trying to flog pricey ready-made pastry over cheap flour at all.

I saw the coffee advertised on TV and (after my Nestle rant, my anti-packaging rant and my don't -people-have-better-things-to-spend-their money-on rant) I wondered why they were trying to bring back Max Pax...

  20. When I graduated from school, half a century ago now, someone gifted me with a hot pot. It was a two cup insulated pot you plugged into the cigarette lighter in your car, and in a matter of minutes you had a hot drink or a pot of soup on the go! Did it work? I don't know - I was too poor to own a car!

  21. I had a very good chuckle at this post! There's clearly a difference now between convenience and madness!

  22. I know most people don't cook most of the time, but that pastry is truly bonkers
As for the coffee, it seems that going to Costa or Starbucks is moving into 'essential' territory, so if you are so busy, you don't have time to go to the coffee shop, here, here's a quicker way to get one. I remember when tea bags came in and how much more expensive they were that loose tea. Added value items spring up all the time, and some of them stick, sometimes, like loose tea, with the original item falling away. It's getting harder to find out lentils dry in a packet. All the supermarkets in Heathfield see those pre cooked ones. At a much higher price. Of course

  23. It is pretty sad that people are prepared to pay for the fashion statement of a takeaway coffee cup. We have a Costa stand in the canteen at work and loads of my colleagues will head down there once or twice a day when there is a kettle, fridge and mugs available much closer!

  24. I totally agree with previous comments (of course we would agree). I would like to share my WTF moment from a few years ago (before it was called this) When browsing in the supermarket and I saw a plastic bowl with conflakes with another inverted 'bowl' on top with milk. I felt so sorry for the people that could not take a singe portion of flakes and milk into work using 'Tupperware' type containers (or other suitable receptacle). I feel similar about the instant pots of porridge (isn't that what sachets are for?) Don't get me started ........

  25. Don't get the coffee either but if you have ready rolled pastry, why not just grate the cheese on top and re-roll a few times. Would save on washing up at least.

  26. Even my 26 year old daughter who earns a lot more than I do said when we saw the ad for the coffee on the tv, how lazy would you have to be not to just put a spoonful of coffee in a thermal cup!
