Courgettes, Marrows and Packing Pots

This week I am spending an hour in the Veggie Patch each morning after I have finished cleaning out the henhouses, generally tidying up and bringing in the last of the crops.  I thought it was about time I harvested this beauty before the wet, wet weather gets to it and turns it to mush ..... then I found some new baby courgettes growing on the sad looking plant.

So one huge and five small, and then ....

... I realised the giant had a brother.

The little ones all went in tonights tea, now I just have to think of what to do with two giant Marrows.  It was Lovely Hubby's idea to put the teaspoon in the picture so you could get an idea of the sizes :-)

I also picked all of the carrots and spent a little bit of time this evening blanching and open freezing them, so that's us with a stock of carrots that should last us a couple of months, tomorrow I think it's the turn of the Beetroot.

I did have a really nice surprise when I found some lovely crisp lettuces just begging to be picked, they seem to love the masses of rain we've been having and were super fresh and crisp.  Lettuce picked from outdoors in November, now that's a new one for me.

I hope you like the new header picture, I realised the other one had to go when I packed the 'Basil' sign in with all the plant pots and things I was packing yesterday.  The plants lasted until about two weeks ago, but were suffering with us being away so often and getting sporadic watering so they were given to the chickens to peck at and then went on the compost heap.

  3. I love your new header Sue. Is that a lake or something at the bottom of that hill? Such a beautiful view from your front door :)

I adore squash veggies. How about stuffing some marrow rings with a sage n onion stuffing mix (or one of the different stuffing mixes you get now) . Or marrow chutney, or marrow jam...yum yum :D

    Take care lovely people.

    1. No there's no lake, it is simply the lowest area of land at the base of the hill, it does flood from time to time, most of the houses on that side are built on the slight rise behind it. The line of white is the houses.

Marrow rings stuff with sage and onion stuffing is a brilliant idea, we'll have it for tea tonight, thanks :-)

    1. Yes, that's our biggest area of reasonably flat land, we have another triangular patch of land to the other side of the house which is where the chickens will most likely be living. We own all the land shown up to the road, and the hillside and woodlands to the left of the photo and round the back of the house. A total of around 4.5 acres.

  7. I love that view too. Do you get a lot of traffic on the road?

Had to smile at the courgettes. I read this recipe this morning on another blog and then found the pictures of your courgettes so here is a link to the other recipe:

  8. We get vast amounts of traffic on the road it is the main A road for the area. Traffic whizzing past at all hours, the only time I can get a clear photo is to be out and about at the crack of dawn on a Sunday :-)

I think Jack has some wonderful recipes on her Blog, I've been following her since she started it and now that she has indexed them all it's so easy to type in whatever ingredient you have and get a tasty and very economical recipe for you item.

But thanks for the link, hopefully some more of my readers will nip over there and get some inspiration :-)

  9. Wow! What whoppers and tiddlers! It never fails to amaze me what a courgette plant can hide under those seemingly innocent leaves....

And the new header is beautiful - what a view!

  10. Love the new header!
Will the hens' eggs take on a basil flavour I wonder? LOL!
Love stuffed marrow, with or without meat! I'd picked all of my veg, or so I thought, found some more beans yesterday! Glad I hadn't 'tidied up' yet!

  11. I am green with envy at your view, great header. I made a Thai style veg curry for dinner tonight, what we do not eat will stuff a hollowed out marrow for Saturday.

  13. Oh, giant courgettes/zucchinis. This recipe mighty help as the flesh is reduced down with no loss of flavour only being now marrows suggest you definitely removed the seedy inner stuff and probably the outerness of the skin .....http://www.ruthpretty.co.nz/recipes.aspx/Antipasto-Nibbles/zucchini-paste-on-bruschetta. i make it using less oil ...................and it freezes well too. I'm sure your chooks (chickens) will enjoy the courgette innards and skin

I hope the last stages of your move goes well - your new home is so lovely. Sending care and huggles,

  15. What a lovely view you have. We moved to Wales 25 years ago now, to do up an old farmhouse and live a bit of the good life : ) Now needing to downsize though.

I still have half a dozen biggish courgettes needing to be used up - must make some chutney I think - as no more room for frozen diced courgette in the freezer. I had a tidy-up in my veg plot a couple of weeks ago and it's now under a pile of muck heap no. 1 for the winter.
