Trees and Colour

Lovely Hubby worked like a real trooper over the weekend and finished off the tree area at the far end of the paddock.  He planted about another fifty bulbs and then wheel-barrowed over load after load of chippings to cover all the bare soil.

There is still lots of work to be done in this area as it will eventually become a screen to the reed bed, pond and soak-away area for the new septic tank we will be installing for our holiday homes in the future.  But for the moment it is looking neat and tidy and at last the trees can stretch out their roots and settle themselves in ... they'll hopefully be here a lot longer than us.

The dogs hung around while I stood snapping, eager to do their usual couple of laps of the paddock and see how many rabbit dropping they can feast on before I spot them at it and tell them to 'leave it' ... they do once spotted but it's turned into a daily pudding after their dish of dog food for breakfast  :-)

There's not a lot of colour anywhere at the moment ......

... but if you look closely the heather is blooming.

The pots on either side of  the front door ....

... both with their little splashes of colour.

I also have a pot on the doorstep and I didn't realise until I downloaded this picture that something has been eating my plant :-(

  3. Really enjoying your blog. Thank you for sharing your lovely home and gorgeous dogs. Your paddock looks to face the main road? is that the case with all your land. Plus are your holiday homes going to be on view of the road also. This is not a criticism just wondered if the road impacts on your enjoyment and do you have to watch that the animals don't run out into the road.

    1. Yes the land faces onto the road, with our woodland behind it on the hillside. The holiday homes will face the road too.... we would be mad not to let them, the view is fantastic. There is talk of the road being moved to take out two of the hazardous bends we have near us, if that happens we will be on a private road, but the test have been ongoing for the last eight years, so we're not holding our breath!!

No I don't like living on a main road. We have no privacy at all, after living in quiet and off the beaten track places for the last five years this is very hard to get used to, every one can see everything we are doing all the time.

We have to be aware of where the animals are all the time as at the moment there is no gate on our short driveway on to the road, this should be rectified in the next few months when the garage and workshop are built and our splay is altered. Then we will be building a wall and gateposts and having large wooden gates which will be made safe at the bottom to stop the dogs being tempted to head for the road.

    2. Yes I wondered about the privacy aspect especially nowadays when you have to be so careful. However, as you say the view is so worth it, plus the road is a plus for holiday makers as you can travel easily around the area (sorry not sure whereabouts you are but looks like a road to other routes) I for one would be very interested in your holiday lets. Do let us all know when you are up and running.
      Kind regards

    1. It is Mavis but she is not off the lead!!

She is never off the lead when she is out of the house. I would not take the risk of her running off again.

  10. Sue, eating the rabbit droppings is kind of gross, but I have one dog who likes to seek out the excrement of her sister and have a nibble. Ugh! We have to keep it picked up all the time. Vet says it is just a behavioral issue. Sorry about your pretty plant.

  11. These cold and colourless months can seem to drag on rather, but you've done really well to achieve such a big step with the trees. Your plot looks great, such fabulous views. I long to have that kind of space around me.

  13. Feels great to be doing something constructive doesn't it, kind of makes spring seem that bit closer.
    What trees have you planted?
