Christmas at the Black Country Living Museum

A bit of a catch up post ... something we did a couple of weeks ago.

Back in May during this years mini holiday, we went to The Black Country Living Museum (see here), when we bought our tickets we converted them, free of charge, into a year long pass.  So when an email pinged into my box saying that the museum was celebrating Christmas through the ages it seemed like too good an opportunity not to go again and make good use of the ability to get in 'free'.

Using our Christmas present money and an anniversary gift from Mum we booked a night in a Premier Inn close to the museum, and paid for the dogs to go into our the local kennels.

It was a lovely way to celebrate our tenth anniversary, a weekend to ourselves mooching about in lovely old houses.

We got to see lovely old delivery vans, vehicles and buses.

Some brilliant houses.

The outside of this one was my favourite, something about the roof to the extension slanting in the opposite direction to the main house and yet it still looking totally sturdy.  Every house had people in period costume making Christmas gifts or foods, and roaring open fires to keep them warm.

This larder was decidedly un-festive ....

... but some of the plates on the shelves gave a list of rations and recipes for wartime treats, which explained the lack of cheer.

Potato Shortbread anyone?

The facilities in all the houses were of the decidedly weather unfriendly type.  These days we simply can't imagine having to nip outside to use the loo in the cold and damp of Winter.

There were Christmas present ideas in the shops.

The rooms above the radio shop were decked out for the festive period ...

... and the table laid ready for dinner.

Paper chains and Christmas cards above the shop next door.

A lovely little vintage tree ... I would love one of those now :-)

We were wrapped up warm, but it was really a lovely day, with a chilly breeze but glorious Winter sunshine.  We were very lucky with our choice of weekend as the following Sunday the whole place was closed due to heavy snow.

New tin bath for Christmas anyone?

And here was the 'National Elf Service' building.

I loved the old enamel pots and pans in this kitchen, and I have just been lucky enough to buy a large pan, just like the one on the front left of the cooker, off EBay for a fraction of the price it would have cost me from an antique shop :-)

The old china and pots caught my eye in this shop window.

The interiors were wonderful with swathes of festive Christmas greenery.

Peeking through each doorway was a true step back in time.

Another kitchen/living room.  This one in one of the little 'back to back' houses.

And all too soon, as the chill of the late afternoon started to fill the air it was time to nip onto one of the old buses and make our way back to the entrance and the gift shop.  Where one or two  purchases might have been made  ;-)

It was a lovely way to spend time celebrating our anniversary and gave us lots of ideas for next years Challenge.

A Snow Day

Pristine snow when we first woke up ...

Minimal traffic first thing.

Going over to let the chickens out .... dressing gown and wellies, usual weekend attire before the first cup of coffee :-)

Only one chicken even peeped out first thing ... they point blank refused to walk on the 'white stuff'.

The view from the front door.

No sign of the hills opposite .... it's a complete white out!!

Perfection ...

... but not for long, the dogs couldn't wait to get into the paddock  :-)

Suky loved it.

Pretty bushes laden with snow.

Suky and Mavis finding little bits of grass under the bushes.

Gorgeous.

The view back to the house.

And up the hillside.

Hi-jinks in the snow.

Little Puggy footprints.

And that virgin patch of snow from the very first photo .....nope I just couldn't resist  ;-)

Stay safe, stay cosy and I hope you are having a nice snow day too.

The View From the Loo

I'm going to miss this ... 'the view from the loo'.

Using the toilet and having a bath in the bathroom over the last couple of weeks has been nice with some of our books to look at on the shelves, but now in the living room the carpet is laid and over the weekend it's been nice to get the room looking a lot more normal, if slightly fresher and with that 'new carpet smell'.

This morning it was time to empty these shelves and lose the 'view from the loo'.

The books once laid out on the floor in the same order they were to go back looked a lot more than they had on the shelves ...

... and the magazines stacked on the chair in the bathroom just didn't look like they fitted easily into the cupboard under the shelves.

But it all fitted back together nicely after the shelves were slid the five foot to the right from the bathroom to the living room.

It's nice getting things back where they belong.

Oh, and I might have bought two more books to add to my collection  ;-)

It's October

It's October ... September has gone ... and WOW what a month.

It started off with us having no water for almost two weeks, then we had a weekend in bonny Scotland and went to one of the nicest weddings we've ever been to, when our niece Erin married the love of her life, Darren in the greatest of style.

Yes,  my lovely hubby scrubs up very well  :-)

I was stocked up with lots bargain vegetable seeds for next year and somewhat of a change for me ... lots of flower seeds too.

I did an Approved Foods order, something I've not done for ages ...

... and saved myself a shed load of money

We managed to get a couple of rolls of the sort of wallpaper we've been looking for for ages in the bargain bin in B&Q, ready for decorating the living room later this month.

We dressed a sheep!!

She's now doing much better, she's still with us and healing nicely .... although once again she's naked apart from her own now growing woolly jumper  ;-)

I filled the freezer with meat of every description for my carnivore of a man.

Got back into menu planning.

Processed homegrown vegetables ...

... in bulk!!

Bought a new book.

It's strange that this should stand out but I really have stopped buying books like I used to .... who would have thunk it,  haha  :-)

We put some of the raised beds to sleep for Winter.

And weeded those that we are still eating from.

Before ...

... and after.

And now to round off the month nicely I have pulled something in my back so am having to take it easy ... really easy. Not something I find easy in any way.  Although chasing one of the Lavender Pekins off the main road first thing this morning is doing nothing for it's recovery!!

Naughty Jill.

So I'm going into October with a whimper and a whine ... and luckily a still live chicken thanks to a nice man who passes daily and recognised it as one of ours and knocked on the door to let me know.

I'll probably be back tomorrow with another post, as the office chair is currently the most comfortable chair in the house  :-)
