The Aga Toaster

I was asked for an explanation of the Aga toaster in an email and so here it is :-)

It's so simple, you just place your bread, buns, teacakes, bagels or whatever you want toasting between the two halves of the toaster, close them together and place directly onto the Aga hotplate.

Put the lid down and stay close by, the intense heats makes toast from frozen in just a couple of minutes.  When you can smell the toast cooking nicely open the lid and turn the 'bat' over and toast the other side, remembering that this second side will toast so much faster as it is already warm from the lid of the hotplate.

We always toast straight from the freezer as that way we never have bread in the breadbin that might go stale.  We only get out exactly what we need, and when the bread (or whatever) is frozen there is no sticking of crumbs to the toaster and it wipes down so simply, but be very careful as it is obviously VERY hot.

I usually stand the toast in a toast rack for a minute, literally 60 seconds as I was advised to by Delia Smith (on tele .... not in person) many years ago, just to allow the steam to disperse and the toast to crisp up, and then butter for the most perfect toast you will ever have tasted.

Or in Lovely Hubby's case add a layer of Damson Gin Jam to complete a simply delicious breakfast or snack.

  2. That toasting idea is fab. Your toast does look evenly done. I just had to replace my pop-up toaster yesterday and would have loved a similar devise to yours for gas cooker usage. Having said that, we are quite happy with the replacement toaster we bought from Tesco as it has a one year guarantee on it. If it fails within this time we just take it back and get a new one free of charge. I`ve only spent £10.50 on this new toaster, so it`s not too much expense for us. Any idea if there would be a similar devise as yours that could be used on a gas hob?

  3. Of course as a bachelor my way is far simpler, aga hood up, bread placed directly on hot-plate, flipped with any close to hand kitchen tool! :-)

    1. That works too .... but as I tend to use my fingers to flip things, I decided I quite liked having fingerprints ;-)

  10. I have to say I have never before heard of Aga...Made me go to Google search to get an explanation, and it's a great concept. Does kind of look like more work than a toaster, but the results look wonderful, and I'm really curious about the jam!

  11. Hi Sue. I came past today and spotted your cottage. Recognised it from the photos and its lovely in real life. I have been past there so many times, its such a nice place so I'm even more envious now lol. We had a good day yesterday in Llandudno with great weather but today, as you know , it was quite drizzly and cloudy over the mountains. We still had a great time and look forward to our week there very soon. We had a walk in BYC on the way back and spotted our holiday cottage. Its just down from pont-y-pair on the back road to Llanwrst so we were pleased with that. Cheerio x

  12. I can actually smell it. We are hoping for a similar range, not sure we can afford an Aga and we will be on oil. Yours looks Devine.

    1. I've added it to the 'Recipe' page at the top of the Blog, it's just under the Damson Gin recipe.

But basically you just use the damsons that have been steeping in Gin to make Damson Gin to go on to make the jam. The other year I had totally no wastage AT ALL as I then went on to feed the damson stones to the Kune Kune pigs who slept very well after their alcoholic little snack.

  14. This is how we do toast when we camp. Nothing better.

    God bless.

  15. Nothing like Aga toast. Doesn't compare to an electric toaster. Can't describe. Is just something you have to experience!
