This Weeks Shopping and Elderflower Cordial

Wow!!  This weeks shopping came to a total of £58.96 (I've updated the stand alone page this morning).

As we are both taking part in the Harcombe 30 Day Body Blitz along with over 4,000 others this July I needed to re-stock the freezer and cupboards with some fish, we had managed to work our way through all of it and supplies were right down.

The large bags of chicken portions are actually for the dogs (although Lovely Hubby has been known to snaffle the odd one) and so have been deducted from the total as have the tablets everything else is included in the £2 House Keeping Challenge budget

I'm getting good at remembering the receipts now, it's a shame I almost forgot the teabags and had to go back into the supermarket for them!!

Back of the receipt showing the deductions for the challenge.

There is now just £43 left in the £2 House Keeping tin.  Now how long can I make that last?

It's Elderflower season and ours are blooming gorgeous, lining the woods with their wonderful flowers and littering the grass with the tiny perfect little flower heads, making for a delightful doggy walks with eyes fixed on the carpet of tiny petals.

They seem to be a little behind like most things are due to the cold start of Spring, but I'm not worried as I'm not making any Elderflower Cordial at all this year,  we are being super strict this month,  steering away from all sugary and processed products in our attempt to keep LH's diabetes and our general health and weights firmly under control.  It is a beautifully tasty drink and has it's place this time of year, but we do recognise that if I make it we WILL drink it, so I am standing firm.

However if you would like the recipe to make some of your own I will direct you to HERE, my most viewed and used Blog entry EVER!!  Thousands have used this and hopefully have been able to make gallons of their own Elderflower Cordial to enjoy.  Each time I click on to check my Blog statistics there is someone, somewhere reading this entry and the numbers of views rise dramatically each week.

I did try to make Elderflower Champagne that year as well but it was not successful and so I never went on to try again.  There really was no need to as this was the most perfect drink as it was.

And now I'm off to do my workout, I'm doing really well sticking to a daily workout, just 35 minutes worth at the moment but that is set to increase tomorrow as I'm finding it easier and easier.

    1. And folk complain about our food prices shooting up! I think if you eat healthily and not buy all processed foods, in relation to wages and compared to many years ago, less is spent on food now than ever. Folk just seem to want to spend their money on gadgets, 'must haves' and treats. I for one never complain that food is too expensive.

I will carry on tantalizing you with my shopping posts :-)

  3. I'm currently in the middle of making a half quantity of Elderflower cordial which we store in the freezer. Have you thought about making say, a 1/4 batch, and freezing it as ice cubes. That way you could plop one in a glass of cold water and maybe limit your calories?

    1. Calories aren't the problem, we don't count them ever. It's the sugar content that I don't want anymore. I have cut virtually all sugar out of my diet and am currently working on quashing LH's sweet tooth.

So although the sugar content per diluted glass may be relatively low, it's still a very sweet tasting drink and not one we should have.

    1. These were taken with my old camera which fortunately still has some charge left in it (I've given my charger to my Mum who needed one). Unfortunately, I am having difficulty getting the instructions for my new camera to load onto the computer so I can't use it properly :-(

  5. Hello Sue,

I was reading your blog today, and read your husband has diabetes. I have self publish a book on Amazon. It is a daily journal for diabetic's.
It is a book were each day you write down your glucose reading, keep track of your daily carb intakes and your meds, as well as what you ate for each meal. Also it helps you keep track of your weight, checking your feet everyday, your a1c reading, etc. I notice that the Amazon UK is selling the book for 12L. So I hope you check it out on Amazon and see if your husband can use this 365 daily journal.
Also what's good about this journal that no matter what day of the year you buy it you get all 365 days.

If you do buy the book please go back and rate my book thank you.

The name of the book is :The Diabetic's Journal: Total Wellbeing for Diabetics by Sharon P. Hladky

Sharon Hladky, P.S. I love your blog and red it daily.

    1. Thank you for getting touch. LH's diabetes is completely under control and he takes no shots or pills, so there is nothing to monitor on a day to day basis. He sees our Doctor once a year and has any check ups he needs then.

Although your book looks like it may be useful for some folk there is nothing in it that is relevant to us. I will leave your comment standing in case it is of interest to any of my readers.

  6. No elderflower goodies for me either this year for the same reason, trying to keep away from sugar.

    1. Good for you :-)

Sugar is the one thing we should not have in our diets at all. It has no use in our bodies and has NO vitamins or minerals. It's taken me a while to move away from sweet things but I honestly think I have finally cracked it :-)

  7. How have you got your sugar under control? Would desperately like to get my cravings under control. Feel it's like an addiction so interested in hearing how you have done it

    1. To tell the truth is was doing Phase 1 of the Harcombe diet a few months ago that cracked it for me. Five days of being strict and now I can drink black coffee without any sweetening and actually enjoy it.

I struggle to eat milk chocolate now and usually go for 85% + dark chocolate and only a few pieces at that. The loveliest things taste so sweet now, little cherry tomatoes and cucumber are unbelievably tasty, it's been a revelation.

And it is most definitely an addiction, sugar and excessive carbohydrate consumption are so bad for your health, but your body usually screams out for things that it's intolerant to, exactly the same as with drug or alcohol addiction. I feel so much better now I'm getting back to eating less carbs. It can get out of control so easily, and that's what has proved to me that it is an addiction and one that I'm staying away from in the future.

  9. Hi I have just seen a post on my list that you wrote about following your blog on blogloving. Does this mean you won't be posting on this site anymore? I'm confused because as far as I can tell nothing has changed on my blog.
    Kindest Regards
    Kay
