Poor Little Mavis

Here's Mavis cuddled up to me on the sofa last night with Charley and Suky keeping her company.

It was an afternoon and evening of television watching for all of us.

At first she was curled up in a most awkward way, the vet said her pain killing injection would last for 24 hours, but I don't think it was that effective.  After a couple of hours she was whimpering when she moved, although once she managed to get to sleep she was nice and peaceful.

As well as being spayed the vet managed to sort out her tooth problems.  The large fang that has grown at a strange angle due to her perhaps being hit in the face with something when she was a pup, has been left in place as the vet says it was a strong and healthy tooth and it would have been a shame to lose it.  Instead she took away the little teeth that were around it that had been trapping food and making Mavis' mouth uncomfortable, and her breath almost unbearable.  After all this and a scale and polish it's no wonder she's sore all over.

I had to put her plastic cone on for the night as she is a fit and nimble dog and was managing to lick her wound and nibble at the stitches.  The vet says it can come off when she is being watched, but better safe than sorry over night or while she is on her own.  At least she likes wearing her little jumper, which keeps her cosy and protects her wound.

It's like having a poorly baby in the house, but I guess that's what she is .... one of my furry babies.

  1. Poor Mavis, hope she feels better today. Dogs usually bounce back quickly don't they? Taking my 15 yr old cat to vet this morning, he has had a runny nostril for over a week. Would have taken him sooner but only noticed it just before we went on hols last week. Lovely last photo of Mavis.

  3. ah poor little thing, my jack russell rescue dog has the same sort of tooth - we call it her snuggle tooth but not sure if that's a family name. Not sure if it sticks out because of abuse but she had to have all her little teeth around it removed and they kept the snuggle. She needed painkillers for the a few days after her teeth but not after being spade. She'll be so much happier...soon xx

  4. With pets you always feel, if only I could explain to them what is happening. Little Mavis has been through the mill in her short life. Probably just feeling better after her horrible experiences away from you and now is in pain again. She'll understand when she comes through the other side. But it must be painful for you too seeing her laid low, even though it is for the best.

  14. Poor darling, hope she is more comfortable today. Our vets have always trusted me to keep a bottle of Metacam in the fridge (I think it's called Loxicom now) for those times when you need a quick bit of help that doesn't warrant a full vet office visit. Given how many four-paws you have, perhaps you could do the same if you don't already?

In the meantime, cuddles and kind words (and some cheese or tuna). She will already know she is home and how much you love her, and that means so much :)
