A Weekend of Weeding

Yesterday on the post about the guys coming and fixing the road sign you may have spotted the newly weeded and planted up flower bed on the inside of our driveway fence.

Lovely Hubby worked his socks off over the Bank Holiday weekend finishing off what I had barely made a dent in.  It was heavy going with long grass growing after us scattering it last year on a breezy day, as well as lots of deep rooted and flourishing weeds.

To give you an idea of what it looked like I have dug out this photo taken in early April, so you can imagine what another month of Welsh rain and intermittent sunshine had done to it, it was about to set seed again and if it was a bigger space a combine would have had a good bale of hay!

Now it's looking good from every angle and once the plants fill out a bit and start to flower it should look lovely.  All these plants have been taken from the pots and tubs from the back of the house, and the lavenders and other things that I grew from plug plants bought last year that over-wintered in the net tunnel.

And with the bark chippings now in place, any weeds that dare to show their faces will be dealt with very quickly.  We don't intend to have to go through all that hard labour again!!

Now I only have to avert my eyes from the bed in front of the house  ;-)

  2. Funny how weeds always grow quicker and stronger than everything else!
It looks good now and that blue sky looks wonderful - we've just had and are going to have day after day of grey.

  3. As I'm currently in the process of doing the same thing I know just how much work that is. And I didn't learn the lesson.. This is the second time I've had to go over the same area. As you say, never again! Look forward to seeing it bloom. Your photos this year really do show how much work you are putting into that place. It is looking fabulous.

  5. I generally love a bit of weeding, I find it therapeutic, but like you I have to weed in places where nature (read : weeds) has taken over again, and again. It is hard work, but the results are always gratifying.
I hope that eventually all the plants and flowers will have established enough to keep the weeds to a minimum.

  6. Strewth, you weren't joking when you said Lovely Hubby worked his socks off all weekend - that looks brilliant.

Like Jessica, I have the same problem with two huge beds in my Cottage Garden . . . damn things have just about gone feral. I turned my back last year and concentrated on different parts of the garden and it all went to hell in a handcart behind my back!

    1. That's just what happened to this bed last year. We got it all looking fantastic, never got round to mulching it and then sowed grass seed right next to it on a breezy day, left it and got on with other things ... and it simply never got any attention again. The worse it got the more we put it off and did other things, but eventually we just had to bite the bullet.

  7. I know when I've been weeding my bum and the backs of my legs ache from the constant leaning over. Its looking lovely, the bark will help with the weeds.

  13. Wow! You don't just have green fingers, you must be green all the way up to your elbows!! And you both work so hard! We have a patch of garden as big as most people's decks, so we have to be selective - herbs, carrots, lettuce and broccoli at the moment. And that keeps us busy enough!

  14. You have a lot of energy! And a green thumb.

Know you are busy but I'm wondering if you might visit?
