Chicken Stocktake

Every year I try to do a Chicken Stocktake, just to get down on the blog the chicken numbers and types we have and the names of the chooks in residence, so here is this years.

1 Lavender Pekin Bantam Cockerel - Jack

2 Lavender Pekin Bantams - Poppy and Daisy

1 Light Sussex - Harriet

On the left representing the 2 Skylines - Dolly, we also have Enid
On the right representing the 4 Rhode Rocks - one of 'The Welsh Girls

On the left representing the 3 Black Marans - one of 'The Gang'

On the right 1 Bluebell - Belle

In the nesting box where she pretty much likes to be all the time 1 Hyline hen - Mother Goose

1 Black Maran Bantam - Tiny

1 Black Pekin Bantam - Ebony

And finally, as usual bustling about in Chicken World, she never seems to sit still except to lay an egg - another Lavender Pekin Bantam - Jill (Jacks sister).

So a total of  18 Chickens
17 girls and 1 boy

and

... a Jack Russell Terrier  ;-)

  1. I am rather envious of your lovely brood and would love to add more to mine but I need to make a Chikenopolis like your fabulous Chicken World first :-) My chicken stock take is much quicker than yours lol I only have 2 chickens Harriet and Bluebell. Lovely pictures too, mine don't usually stand still long enough to get nice pictures :-)

    1. It's not easy to get photos of them all, for every one that I publish I have taken about 10 that get scrapped!!

  2. I had Pekins at one time Sue, but they have all died out now. We have about fifteen and they are an assortment - but they lay extremely well (the farmer's main criteria.)

    1. I will always have a little band of Pekins, although they only lay for about four months of the year, the eggs are delicious and the little birds are such characters. And of course if your cockerel is a Pekin the crowing is much quieter when they come to life at 5am in the Summer months ;-)

  3. That's nice. How on earth did you take the first photo from inside the chicken house ?

    1. Haha .... the back door (for humans to get in for cleaning) is directly opposite the chickens pop hole :-)

I bet you were thinking I'm that skinny I could fit in the house to get the shot .... sorry to disappoint ;-)

  4. Lovely healthy looking chooks !
We've got 7 and a boy. They are mostly mixed breed. And they lay more eggs than what we can consume.

  6. We just added 2 maran, another auracana? and a white leghorn. We have 7 out in the hen house and the babies are in our sun room. How old do you think they need to be to be added to the flock??

    1. Either day one under a broody hen, or in a small run inside your main run so they can get used to each other through wire. This is what we have done in the past.

They should be at least a few weeks old and able to keep together as a group or they will just be pecked to death.

If you can't manage a separate run you could try putting them in at feed time and feeding as two groups this will keep the established hens busy for a few minutes and give them time to meet.

  7. What a pretty collection Sue. Is it obvious to you which breed laid which egg? I am completely ignorance of things avian, or chicken. The rule I live by, as a 'townie' is, Free range, or Nothing... It is the most I can do living here.

    1. I can pretty much tell you which girl laid which egg, their eggs are very individual :-)

  11. Beautiful chickens! we also have just welcomed a gorgeous Jack Russell puppy into our family and someone told me to keep a close eye on my chickens with her. Do you have any problems with your JR and the chickens?

    1. All our animals are taught from day one with us that the chickens are part of family. We use the phrase 'Be Nice' very firmly said as a training command.

If this doesn't work for your new JR try putting her in with a stroppy cockerel ... she will soon find out who's the boss :-)

Congratulations on your new pup, they are very loyal and intelligent little dogs. Xx
