The Last of the Tomatoes

At last we have reached the end of this years mammoth tomato harvest.  This is it, the end, finito, no more tomatoes to pick.  Half of the stems and stalks have been added to the compost heap and the other half will join them later.

As you can see I got a nice final mix of colours.  The ripe red and yellow tomatoes will be turned into one final big pot of Roasted Tomato Soup and the green ones are destined to become a batch of Green Tomato Chutney, I think we have just one jar left of last years tomato chutney so this has come at the perfect time.

The sad looking plants before the harvest ..... they look even sadder now!!

It's surprising how different it looks inside the polytunnel looks now without the mass of tomatoes on either side of the front door as you step in, I suddenly have lots of space.

  1. My mother used to make green tomato chutney many years ago - I adored it and used to have it in sandwiches for my tea.

  3. I have the prospect of more tomatoes to come - the "de colgar" Spanish hanging tomatoes, now hanging up in my garage. This could be a breakthrough for me - "fresh" tomatoes in December???

  6. I bet the polytunnel is warm to sit in!

As for the others stuff, "Last of the tomatoes" sounds like a possibly rather squidgy action movie

  8. Check out Green tomato and Cracked Pepper cake. Its a good way to use up green tomatoes, is a delicious cake and freezes well. Keep in the fridge whilst eating it as its quite moist and goes mouldy within 4 days if kept in a tin at room temperature. And you can only make it at this time of year! Helen in France

  9. Your tomatoes looks wonderful. Try using soe of the green ones in a stir fry - with the heat they will sweeten but not go mushy! Michelle in Wellington,NZ

  10. It only seems five minutes ago that I (and other people reading your blog) were worried about the slow start to the growth of our tomato plants. Now we are in October and our tomatoes are over. I have had a few this year from my greenhouse as after the slow start the plants grew enormous. Whatever happened to the summer? Green tomato chutney sounds delicious.

  11. They do look stunning. I will be picking the last this weekend and then time to clear out the greenhouse. Green tomato chutney is really good, i remember making my own a few years back and it was quite delicious.
