Cladding the Workshop

Another delivery of working materials and another job in the process of being done.

When we got planning permission for the garage space and workshop part of the permission was that we wood clad the workshop to take away the industrial look of it, and to be honest I hate the blockwork so it would have had to be done anyway!!

It will look so much better when it looks like a building made of wood as you approach the house.

Lovely Hubby has finished the first stage, which was to put the battening on that will hold the top layer of work.

It was fiddly and time consuming but I think he's made a brilliant job of it and to my mind the whole building is already starting to look just that little bit better.

Just the front and the right-hand side are being done.  This side gets the full force of the Winter winds and rains so it was imperative to take the cladding round the corner to protect the building as well as making it look better.

I think he's done a lovely neat job, and after a day off yesterday to join in with the 'ladies who lunch' he's back at it again today, soon I'll be called out to lend a hand as the lengths of wood being attached on top will need two people to keep them straight while they are being fixed in place, but for now while he is doing some tricky cutting out to get the bottom layer straight on the right-hand side I'm keeping out of the way.

  1. It will be good to have the building protected before winter really sets in, so well done, LH. As for blogs - I think mine might have been on your sidebar, but I have lost my blogging mojo since my lovely Zac died in August. He was my companion on all my walks and my reason to get out there and take photographs. Hopefully, one day I shall resume but I wouldn't expect you to reinstate my blog while there's nothing new to read. :(

    1. So sorry that you lost Zac, he was the happiest looking dog.

I have re-instated you, now you have to blog .... for me, my readers and to honour Zac's memory ... no pressure then ;-)

(Have you thought about giving a good home to a little rescue dog?)

    2. Awww Sue - I'll see what I can do. I have given thought to a rescue dog but I have also seen a litter of Border Collie puppies . . . . . decisions, decisions. I need to get my replacement knee sorted out now, but my daughter-in-law, who will be living with me when my operation is due, says that she would walk a puppy for as long as necessary!!! She REALLY wants me to have another dog asap.

  2. Lovely neat & tidy job - it's going to look great. There's always so much to be done, it never ends! All the hard work will be well worth it, you're looking VERY SMART indeed. Have a great weekend. Kind regards, Louise S, Cheshire.

    1. Not if he saw the inside!!

At the moment it's a clutter bucket of rubbish, empty boxes and my wood painting trestles, oh and one very posh and expensive saw to cut all the wood to size, which will be used in LH's future wood working enterprise.

Why is it when men 'need' a gadget it costs hundreds or thousands and when we need something it's the price of a baking tin or garden hoe!!.

  4. That's going to look lovely. Are you going to stain the wood or is it cedar ?

    1. It's nothing as posh as Cedar I'm afraid, just pine.

We are creosoting each side of each piece as it goes up .... says the girl with the aching painting arm. LH has a 'thing' about creosote, I would have opted for a nice stain ... but it's his workshop, his project, so I'm keeping quiet ... for once, it doesn't happen very often ;-)

    2. I love the smell of creosote. It reminds me of the seaside and fishing boats.
Our barn is also clad in just pine. We'll have to creosote again soon if only to make it less visible to the world.

    3. I've just been told off ... it's not pine it's a redwood that is harder and supposedly longer lasting than pine. Oh well, it looks just like pine to me and I've been stood creosoting it for the last 90 minutes ... and I don't like the smell of it!!

  5. My husband is rubbish at DIY! It looks great!

  6. That LH of yours is a very capable bloke, by the sound of it! I'm also a lover of creosote - it smells so clean, almost "antiseptic".

  7. I think he is making a super, professional-looking job here - well done - please tell him so from me.

  8. I love the smell when they ashphalt the roads. I think a lot of these smells often remind us of certain points in our childhood.

  9. Wives were invented just to hold up bits of wood while they're fixed into place. That and making the coffee..

  10. That will look great when completed. Congratulations on another job almost done!
