The Gadgets Were Out

For the last few weeks of hot, hot day and night time temperatures the Aga was off and the gadgets were out.

The rice cooker was in use most days.

The soup maker was in use most days.

The Remoska in use every day.

The microwave did it's usual stirling back-up job.

This week the rain is falling non-stop, the temperatures have plummeted, the builders have had to pack up early yet again due to the most violent thunderstorm and torrential rain.  Rosy is quivering in her Thunder Jacket she's really scared of thunder and lightening, so I'm joining her on the sofa for an afternoon movie and some snuggle time.

Oh ... and the gadgets are back in the cupboard .... we needed the warmth of the Aga.

It warms the house, dries the washing, gives a scared dog something to stand against when Mum leaves her for a few minutes ... and come teatime it will once again be doing the cooking.

Luckily I can now bring it back up to temperature with the solar panels powering the return to full heat capacity and it doesn't cost us a penny.

Hope the weather's better where you are.

Sue xx

    1. Its heavy showers on the Essex coast but its very humid. The temperatures are 19-20 most evenings. The bedroom is too hot! The garden is loving the wet and warm weather but do are the weeds ;0(

    2. For more information on Remoska look at the Lakeland website, this is where we got ours from many years ago. It seems to have had a bit of a revamp since we got ours but it does just the same job.

  3. Contrary to the weather forecast Sue, it has been a lovely, hot day here in North Yorkshire. I am having a day out tomorrow, what's the betting it will be wet?

  4. Hot and humid but that is Florida most of the year though we are having unusual rain patterns. I hope the dog will be okay. Stay warm...

  5. Was very tempted by a smoothie maker the other day. Till I realised what a waste of money it would be.

  6. So far the gadgets have stayed in the cupboard here, however after the rain we had starting Monday it is really humid and I am considering pulling them all out.

    God bless.

  9. I too wondered what a Remoska is?? Having so much heavy rain in Stockport presently, even flooding in some parts. Yes it is good growing weather, wet and warm - the weeds are coming on a treat!! Kind regards, Louise S, Cheshire.

  11. Hi Sue. I love reading your blog and you have been a HUGE inspiration to me .... but I just have to pipe up about something that gets my goat a little. You say free power .... but what did it cost you guys to have all that solar equipment purchased and installed? I'm sure you are nowhere near break even .... which technically means that your power is NOT free. Add to that, the cost of maintenance (and there WILL be costs) and your break even point moves even further away. Were the solar panels/equipment a gift that cost you and LH absolutely nothing at all? Then in that case your power is indeed technically free but don't get me started on the cost-to-environment created by MANUFACTURING all that stuff - usually in China - in the first place.

    1. We will break even in a few years. But this has all been paid for up front and is now ours. Maintenance is included in the cost of the system and it is all fully guaranteed As for the manufacturing I really do not know about that LH does, he's the engineer of the family. If any of what I say 'gets your goat' don't bother to read in future.

  12. Sorry to offend you. I just think it's misleading to call it free power when it is not that's all.

    1. I understand what you are saying but to me the fact that we are now receiving money into our bank account for the power we sell to the National Grid and NOT paying for any power we use is us making our own electricity.

Maybe I look at this in a simplistic manner but it's the way I am, sorry to offend your wanting everything to be specifically accurate. We are on a journey to self-sufficiency, or as damn near as we can get to it, and us having the solar panels to my mind is a tick in the box on that journey.

  13. And then you doctor comments!! Why? Because it doesn't fit in with the impression you want to make? Nothing wrong with being honest for goodness sake. In fact, it makes you look very very petty.

    1. I know of no way that I can possibly 'doctor comments'. All that I can do to someone else's comment is to delete it or publish it. There is no way I can change or alter what they have said, so I do not know what you mean by this!!

    2. If you are meaning that your comment didn't publish the second you typed it, then that is because you commented on a post that was a few days old, and those comments need to be moderated before they are published, this is the way to cut down on and to spot all the spam comments that get sent to old posts. I still have no way of altering them they either get published, in the case of genuine comments or deleted in the case of spam.
