The New Challenge

 ~
As part of 'Our Year of Living Simply' the idea for this Summer was to be as self-sufficient as possible from the things we grow and produce on the farm.  After living this lifestyle for three years we are now properly organised and able to really give this a go.
~
 ~
To make us really get stuck into this we have decided that from Monday 6th June we will have an emergency housekeeping fund of £100 and we will see how long we can make this last. (And yes...it is in £1 coins!!)
~
 ~
I will not be setting foot in Mr Tesco or Miss Asda or any of their evil money-grabbing cousins except when I really have to.  I can not ban them completely as at the moment I have nowhere else to get milk from.  But to limit temptation, something I can ill afford, I will only stock up on this precious white commodity when I have to, buying a few bottles at a time and freezing some of them.
~
 ~
Our own produce is now kicking in big style, as you will see from the sidebar I have started listing again the things we are eating from the Kitchen Garden and the polytunnel, and the list is starting to get bigger.  So this Challenge should last a while.
~
 ~
There is no specific end date, as long as we can make our £100 last, the Challenge will last.  We have jams and chutneys stored in the larder from last year, we have the cupboards still pretty full of foods despite our 'Storecupboard Challenge' at the start of the year, and two of the freezers still hold produce from last year.  So we will not go hungry!!
~
 ~
So for the next few weeks/months this Blog will record just how we are managing with this Challenge as well as the day to day antics of life on the farm.  There will be lots of home cooking going on, preserving, baking bread and processing foods in a simple way.  Each days meals will be governed by what is available on the farm, picked and gathered fresh, processed simply and enjoyed together.
