Help.....

~
Help!!  I need a recipe idea for this little beauty....what is it I hear you cry..... 'Oh it's a Kohl Rabi' I say sounding all knowledgeable...but in truth it's my first ever Kohl Rabi and I cannot think of a thing to do with it....other than stand back and admire.  I have lots of little ones growing too, so I hope if I can find a yummy recipe for this giant beauty we actually like the taste of it!!

Eating our own food is proving to be brilliant, although we did it last year, the emphasis was slightly different.  Then I would think of what we were having for tea and go and pick some veggies to go with it, this year I pick the veggies and then think what do I need to add to complete the meal (if anything).  So a subtle shift in thinking and eating but one that brings a greater sense of 'doing it ourselves'.

Only sometimes I just can't think of what to do, hence the appeal at the top!  Sometimes you just know what to have and my favourite lunch at the moment is this.  A large hardboiled egg, chopped and mixed up with one of our lovely finely sliced spring onions  and spoonful of homemade mayonnaise and couple of freshly picked leaves straight from the polytunnel served on a couple of slices of seeded loaf, a bought one in this instance but this will be homemade too from next week, when my fresh bread runs out.

For tea the same night we had stuffed mushrooms with a sprinkling of grated cheese.  The homegrown things in this meal were the chopped spring onions and the tomato sauce in the stuffing, (mixed with cous cous) and the large plate of salad that went with them, lettuce, mixed leaves, spring onion, and radishes.

It's starting to feel a lot like self-sufficiency, and with that in mind we have been doing some serious thinking and talking over the past few days and there are changes brewing inthe not too distant future, I'll not say too much at present as things are in very early stages but life is about to get a lot easier and a whole lot more enjoyable.

  1. wow! what an impressive specimen! I read in one of my vegbooks that every season you should grow something you think you don't like or something you've never tried before... I bought a packet of "goldenberry" seeds in a garden centre sale as a punt and now have 6 big plants growing flowering- I have no idea what they taste like though!

  2. It is lovely grated in homemade coleslaw, sweetened with grated carrot and a pinch of celery seeds.

  3. Peel it, slice it and then eat it raw!

  4. use as you would a white turnip, raw in salads or lightly steamed (cooks quicker than nturnip)

  11. Sue, i've heard differing views on Kohl Rabi - some say it's terrible and others love it. so i guess you'll just have to try it and see what you think, never grown it myself so will check back to see! Kathy

  12. Hi Sue,
I had this problem a couple of years ago when I grew kohlrabi for the first time. Kohlrabi coleslaw is lovely, but if you want to cook it. How about some kohlrabi pakoras/fritters, a lasagne or savoury muffin cakes. Check out the link below. Hope it inspires. I think there is also a kohlrabi veggie burger on my recipe, but I can't seem to find it. Warmest of wishes.

  13. Hi Sue,
Me again - Shaheen aka mangocheeks. I Found the recipe I was thinking of (see previous comment). It wasn't a Kohlrabi burger, but a Celeriac veggie burger. I am confident if you subbed the kohlrabi in place of the celeriac it would work out well.
