Dreams

I dream, a lot.

Big dreams, small dreams that are over in minutes, funny dreams, in which I've been known to laugh out loud or wake up laughing, small bitty dreams that barely follow on from each other in story but play out one after another, and sometimes very strange dreams that have a hint of what has happened during the day before.  I have dreamt whole episodes of what would make a brilliant detective series, with characters, plots and storylines that make complete sense .... if only I were to write it down instead of letting it fade as I lie and contemplate what the preceding hours have shown me.

But no dream has been as unsettling or as immediate as the one I had over the weekend.

I dreamt I died!!

I had taken myself to hospital to the A&E department.  I stood and waited my turn to speak to the receptionist.  She asked my name, my address, my telephone number and entered the details on her notebook, then she asked me what was wrong.  I told her I did not know but that I felt unwell.  She pushed for an exact illness and again I told her I couldn't put in to words what was wrong, she said without an 'illness' she couldn't process my form and I would have to leave .....

.... I dropped down dead on my side of her desk.

The next moment I was coming out of my childhood home, running down the front garden path and along the street, it was all exactly as I remembered it.  I ran to the corner of the old Co-op butchers and there coming round the corner with an empty lunch box in his hand was Lovely Hubby wearing his favourite stripey T shirt, when he saw me running towards him he opened out his arms and I ran into them.

We hugged, tightly and lovingly and I knew I should not let him go for as long as possible .... for this was the last time we would ever see or feel each other in this world.

I woke with a start, wide awake with every part of the dream imprinted on my very being, I turned over in bed and hugged the man that is my world ... and he hugged me right back.

I always understand completely the point that my dream has made, psychoanalysing myself has always come easily to me thank goodness.  I won't share the full meaning behind this one, but I know it, and it's valuable.

  1. Ooh reading this has given me goose bumps! My dreams very often involve me floating somewhere - the last one was floating around my old primary school! I also make howling noises, some of which the kids recorded on their phones when they lived at home.

  2. I used to bake in my sleep, all the movements apparently. I would make and roll out pastry, fill the case, top it, put it into the wall. Then go back to sleep and get it back out at the correct time!

  3. Oh Sue iv got tears in my eyes reading this. Dreams are part of our conscious self and can be so valuable at times. There have been so many sad deaths this past week of people in the public eye in fact its been heart breaking I think that makes you think about life and how precious it is and that we should make the most and value each day and our loves ones to, dee x

  4. Dreams are weird aren't they? I've had some terrifyingly real ones in the past and woken up sobbing. As you say, it's good as a reminder to treasure what you have x

    1. It's always unsettling when you wake up crying isn't it, it seems to merge the dream and the reality. xx

  5. I've always had vivid dreams, most of them surreal to the extreme! I often have similar, "repeat" dreams and yesterday it was one of my intruder-in-the-house dreams. Unfortunately, these particular dreams seem to distress me and poor hubby has to wake me up as I'm crying out in my sleep!

  6. Sounds as if you dream in the same way as I do! I had an "I died" dream many years ago- I was looking down on a stranger getting my 2 little girls ready for school and she was putting on their coats. I was distraught thinking IT SHOULD BE ME DOING THAT!! It was awful and I woke up crying. But it was such a wake-up call to appreciate every single second of your kids' lives.

  7. Dreaming of death is usually linked to new beginnings.
I don't dream much anymore, but I used to dream a lot about being pregnant.

  8. I agree that your dream is a good reminder to cherish your loved ones and to be grateful. I don't really remember my dreams as much as I used to. When I was in university, a housemate was taking a course in which she had to keep a dream journal and then try to analyze her dreams. I did it with her and it was very interesting. -Jenn

  9. I dream alot, both when awake (day dreams) and asleep. The worst is when someone is chasing me in a multi storey car park. And there is also one where I am in the woods looking for something I have buried but I cant find it, I am savagely using my hands to rip at the dirt. I wake covered in horror sweat and have to get in the shower and sleep on the sofa after that.

  10. At 25 years old I still have night 'terrors', I will scream and attempt to run away from whatever it is that's scared me. I've landed in a heap at the bottom of the stairs, tried (and failed) to get out the window and even fallen over the dog in the past. I can never remember in the morning, all I get is an unsettled feeling. I'd love to know what it means!

  11. Dreams are so real when you are experiencing them. I've had a couple of the classic ones where you're falling and wake up with a jolt. The jolt is so violent it's woken my hubby. Some people believe you are in such a deep sleep you stop breathing and jolt from the falling sensation is the brain waking you up. You are fortunate to understand your dreams I certainly don't but I dream very rarely.

  12. How very weird, I don't think I would like a dream like that.
One I have quite often is being a Cub Scout leader - which I was for years - and forgetting all the games we used to play, so a room full of boys and no idea what to do!

  13. Wow, what a powerful dream. Its great that you were able to understand it. I often dream about loved ones who have died and wake up in tears and then feel like Ive lost them all over again. It really shakes me up. Ive also woken up a few times when someones shouted my name even tho theres either noone there or my husband is fast asleep beside me.

  16. Sue - what a fascinating dream. I dream vividly all the time and often the dream stays with me all day afterwards. I am glad you can make sense of it - that kind of dream often takes you through some difficult situation.

  17. I dream and the ones I recall are nearly always jarring. Good that you understand this one and cherish the man beside you.

  18. What an interesting dream! I have vivid dreams and keep a dream diary. I have recurring ones and love to analyse and interpret them. They often help me sort out stuff that's going on. I have a recurring one atm that's puzzling me a bit!

  19. It used to be that I dreamt a lot of being shot and stuff, or having Sir Thomas Cromwell chasing after me with a huge sword, but not so much now.

  20. A few years ago I dreamed one night that my eldest son came to visit and his face was looking different. I knew something terrible had happened when I woke crying. Later that day I had a phone call form a friend of my son`s to tell me that he had been attacked by some yobs who picked up a concrete slab and threw it in his face, just in the same night I had that dream. My son was in hospital with a broken nose and cheek bone. Now, how do you explain this? A weird dream that actually was happening. - I`ve never had such a dream before then or after that again.

  22. Oh no I hate dreams like this, they leave you feeling numb.

On the up side it would appear that your dream may mean big changes to come. Leaving your past behind and moving forward to new beginnings. Sounds refreshing :)

Love and hug your loved ones,
