Getting Your Head Bitten Off

The new Almond trees at the far end of the paddock are full of blossom, looking so pretty and miraculously all the blossom has survived through the gale force winds and frosty mornings of the past few days.

What has not survived and is looking horribly sad and stunted is this poor Tulip, and in this case it's not the wind or frost to blame.

It was one of these lovely Parrot Tulips  .....

... as were it's friends.

Luckily we got to see and very briefly enjoy the first one at it's best the day before the rabbits found them.  I went back to take a photo of it but the stunted little remains were all that was left by the next day.

Now that the bl**dy fluffy bunnies have eaten all the tulips that were in flower, the little sods are starting on the daffodils ... I hope they get tummyache.

Ravaged beyond help.

One left ... it'll be gone by tomorrow.

Did any of you spot the tail in the first picture, yes it was Ginger, joining us on the doggy walk last night after tea.  I always think lush green grass sets of his colouring wonderfully.  He's a handsome and wonderfully happy chappy at the moment.

    1. We have both Buzzards and Red Kites but the rabbits here can dash into the woodland for protection.

  3. Morning Sue. Your evening stroll sounds wonderfully relaxing (pictures help to capture the moment), and how funny that Ginger joins in too! He sounds quite a character. What a shame about your flowers. Since the loss of my Bonnie (GSD), I have seen cats come in our garden and there must be other animals that come in as I have noticed pathways in the grass. Mmmm... not funny, as I do like a nice garden. When we had chickens, we were told that if you let your dog (a bitch) pee-pee in the surrounding area where the chickens are kept it prevents foxes attacking them. Not sure if it's true or just an old wives tale. Enjoy your day. CMW

    1. Almost right, it's male dogs urine that will deter a fox, not bitch's. Unfortunately ALL our dogs are girls so when needed Lovely Hubby steps up to the mark ;-)

    1. So would I be, but we have a lot of woodland here, they use it for protection.

  5. A pity that Ginger hasn't got a taste for Rabbit, like my old cat used to have. She was only little, but would hunt down any rabbits that ventured into our garden,
You have my sympathy - I hate it when 'something' eats my flowers; it's really disheartening.

    1. He has, but he can only manage to eat one a day!! He does kill more ..... this place is full of bodies, luckily the crows finish a lot of them off!!

  7. Around here the cats have a party when it's rabbit season. I'm surprised Ginger isn't sorting this out for you.
Slugs are my downfall. Oh and chickens but that's my fault for letting them roam

    1. He's doing his best and Rosy has three half eaten bodies on the go at the moment, but there are more rabbits than they can cope with.

  8. Difficult to keep them out once they are in, I suppose rabbit netting everywhere is the only solution. The tulips would have looked lovely, what a shame

    1. We are going to make the veggie patch more rabbit proof with rabbit netting and a scarecrow, I can get over them eating my tulips but if they start on my food I'll be getting out the rifle .... they should be warned I am a crack shot!!

  10. Sue, so sorry about your tulips, as the picture you provided is beautiful. Between the rabbits and the deer it is hard to maintain any sort of garden in Texas unless you have a high fence.

    1. At least we don't have deer here ... we did at our last place, they thought my raised beds were a breakfast buffet!!

    2. Ha ha ha, we have deer here that get into the gardens and eat everything. They have no fear the deer here and just give you a filthy look.

  12. such a shame... I lost my star gazer lilies, I am convinced it was a ground hog or rabbits!

  13. We have lots of rabbits in our neighbourhood but they don't eat any of my flowers, only nibble on the grass and the crab apples that fall on the ground across the street. The deer, on the other hand, love the tulips and make it look like someone came around and used a scythe on them.

  15. From Margie in Toronto - my dad used to go nuts - said it was like supplying them with a salad bar!

  16. Try a circle of chicken wire around them so you get to see them but they cannot easily get to them.
PS what is all this about choosing cakes when you press publish!! Is this a new Blogger anti spam precaution? It can make you a bit peckish looking at delicious cakes. I am now wondering what happens when someone publishes on my wordpress blog!

  17. So frustrating when you nurture and look forward to seeing them bloom, then for small creatures to decimate them in minutes :(
